I bought a Nikon Coolpix by accident that doesn't power on. Any techno-geniuses out there who might know why this is? (besides the batteries-which are fine!) Could it be a short? Is there any hope? Do I need to take to a professional?

1. Battery power.
2 . memory card or slot got short circuited.( Try removing the memory card)
Rest can be checked only by a service engineer.
3. Focusing motor doesn't resets.
4. lens barrel got jammed.

may well be a lose cable in their somewhere thats not making connection.... check the battery compartment make sure the contacts are all clean... apart from that i think you need to take it to a repair shop : (

Either your batteries are not put in the proper way or you are not using the right button-read the instructions.

May be u haven't inserted ur memory card ?
It happened with me once :p
