What can we do to combat this? Why are we driving 40-90 minutes each way for the job. is it cause we cant afford to live in the communities that have the jobs? many even most homes are wired for broadband now. are we finally ready as a society to fight for telecommuting as more standard job options? First they started putting jobs far out in suburbs, then brought them back to city but bby then the home prices were out of reach to many families. i dont want to live in podunk, usa just to be near a decent job. and i dont want to pay $3500 a month rent to live in the city either. what gives?

Join the club as this article states many people are spending 4 hours a day commuting. many people are priced out of anything reasonably near down town NYC,SF and LA and have to resort to long trips to work. Telecommuting is an option for some people but not all as most employers want people at their desks at least of few times a week. A possible solution is to move to small towns with good economies such as Madison WI where housing is still reasonable.

Well, I live 32 miles from work so I drive at LEAST ~65 miles every day. I could live closer to work, but I love the area that I live in. I have 10 acres of land, a huge home, parking, privacy, peace & quiet, low crime...etc. Because it's a rural area, there are no high tech / high paying jobs in my area, so I have to commute. Telecommuting is not an option for me since I have a very hands-on job (lab) and it is not an option for many people. Also, I think most companies are leary of allowing employees to work from home since they cannot keep on eye on them.

I guess it comes down to what is more important to you; your job or your home. If you are willing to move to another state where you can have the best of both without the heavy commute, then I guess that's your best choice. It's all about what you are willing to sacrifice and put up with. I'm sure things will start to change drastically, though, as gas prices continue to rise and reserves dwindle.

I take an international flight from Los Angeles to New Zealand and back every day, in addition to my 300 mile drive out to the office and back to the airport in the evening.
