The ones he was speaking to thought by just studying scriptures they would gain eternal life by being religious --- but they rejected coming to Jesus.
Jesus knew their real intentions -- he tells them that in John 5:42-43.
Empty praises meant nothing to him --- since the men didn't come to Him for eternal life...

Just a minute let me look it up Okay so according to the Passages before it and after it I have to come to a realization, and you can't take a scripture out of it's context b/c then you could make it sound like anything you wanted it to be. So this is what i think He means-
Passage John 5:39-45:
39You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
41"I do not accept praise from men, 42but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
So what Jesus is saying is that just b/c you read the scriptures and follow through with the motions doesn't mean you are going to heaven. And he is not going to accept praise from a hypocrite b/c he knows what is in your heart and he knows if you praiseing him for the right reason. I'm a christian and this is what I believe.

You have read this verse correctly. In all likely hood you could understand this so clearly because you are not a Christian, and have not been given a misinterpretation of it previously
Jesus was an enlightened master who had overcome his ego. Only an ego sees praise or worship as a thing of value. With his ego under control Jesus sought only to teach what he had learned.
He saw himself only as our brother, no more, no less. Jesus was telling his disciples to forgo any ideas of praising him because it would be a waist of time and would get in the way of their understanding of what he was trying to show them.
It still gets in the way. When people worship Jesus and focus on the idea that he is God rather than a loving brother with something important to teach them, they often miss his message completely. His message of universally applied love extended to all men without any judgment becomes completely lost amongst the dogma and misrepresentations about him.

John 5:41 reads, "“I do not receive honor from men." The Greek word translated here as "men" is "anthropos," meaning "human kind, without regard to sex."
You have misinterpreted this passage, because you're looking at it out of context. Within the entirety of Jesus' discourse at John 5:31-47, it is explained that human beings did not give Him the right to receive praise and honor; God did! Jesus contrasts the righteousness of His position with that of the Pharisees, who "receive honor from one another" (v. 44). It can be summed up this way: if you do not honor Jesus because you fail to believe God gave Him the right to be honored, and instead honor humans who deserve no honor, you will be unable to believe; and if you do not believe, you will not receive salvation.
Sadly, we see examples of this on Yahoo! Answers every day.
Peace and love in Jesus.

Out of context as it ends with a comma. Reading the pre and post texts the point being made is who the men are which are the Pharisees whose praise was not worthy because they saw Him as a man not as God. he wishes to bestow praise upon them as believers, but instead they worship their own knowledge of the scripture yet do not understand the scriptures.

When anyone pulls Bible versus out the air, you get "I do not accept praise from men..." Well lets pull some other versus from the Bible - I like these "Judas hanged himself" "Go and do likewise" - so why ain't everyone going out and hanging themselves?
You have to read the whole chapter to know what Jesus was talking about. Who is He taking to? Why did he say what he did?
If you do not read the whole thing - you miss the whole point. So why don't you "Go and do likewise"?

In my Bible he says "I am not looking for human praise". He says this while talking to a group of Jews who say the believe in God and Moses but won't believe Jesus is who He says He is. Also, this is just one verse out of many. Always look at the surrounding context.

That is not what it says at all - why don't you back up a few verses. He is talking about men not believing in God because they can't see him, but if someone came to them they could see, they would believe. Jesus saying I do not receive honor from men means - Men are not honoring him like they should. Men as all mankind.
You can't take one verse and try to make up your own meaning. You have to read more than that.

Sorry, not a valid question. Place the verse (John 5:41) back into context of whom Jesus was speaking to, what he was speaking about. Read all of John 5. Then think about it.
You cannot take scripture out of context. Its like misquoting a celebrity. You took what they said and twisted it to your own point of view.

In this case, "Men" refers to all humanity. And no, Jesus had no interest in being worshipped, His was to show the way to the Father.
