Roll over on their back and let you pet them and also if you want a dog that would be good around children you want a forgiving pup. You need to pinch then, lightly but enough to get there attention if they pull away but do not get up and leave they are the most forgiving, if they move away and come right back, they are okay too, but if they move away and do not come back to you with in 20 seconds, even with you calling them it is not a forgiving dog and most likely not be the best match for around kids.

You don't want a submissive puppy. If it's submissive as a puppy, there's a good chance it'll be scared as an adult. The submissive puppy will be the one that hides in the back and won't come near you. A pupy that will let you hold it on its back without a fight probably has mental problems cause puppies don't like to be flipped over and will try to get up

I have heard that you hold them like a baby on their back and if they will let you, they are submissive and a good choice. If they flip out really fast, they are high strung. I don't know if that is true or not! You should also observe the dog with other dogs to see its nature.

Here is the link for the Volhard Puppy Test, including scoring info. You would not have to do all the test, just Restraint, Social Dominance and Elevation. Also, ask breeders if they test the puppies themselves, this often indicates a good breeder who cares about the quality of their puppies, and is thus less apt to breed dogs with temper problems.

P.S. You don't want the MOST submissive puppy, especially if you have kids, shy puppies are prone to being 'fear biters' as adults.

I don't think it depends as much on the dog, as much as how you raise it. Wolves are dogs ancestors and it's just natural for a dog to show submission to it's Alpha, in this case, it's owner. If you raise it by showing it that it should respect you and all humans then it should be a good dog.

A more submissive dog may shy away from you at first, not look into your eyes, and/or roll on its back.

the dog that is very friendly. when you come to pet it, it will roll on its back and pee a little bit. or squat/sit and pee when you pet it. submissiveness can be untaught tho by teaching dogs tricks and praising them and builiding up confidence. also seeing new people and as long as those people dont baby the dog then its fine. i have owned one since october and couldnt have asked for a better dog.

Please don't ever force an unfamiliar dog on to his or her back. This is a fantastic way to get bit in the face and throat.

Think about it.... You don't know the personality of the dog, yet you are purposefully going to get on the ground with it, roll it so that it's mouth is pointing up, and then looming over it with your face? Hello? Bad idea?
