I think they keys are planning and self-control. You don't have to be obsessive about the process, sitting atop a pile of gold coins in your walk-in closet, but you do need to script out your needs, live within your means, and plot out the major purchases you wish to make along the way. It's okay to incur debt, it's okay to live close to the wire for awhile, but life tends to throw curveballs at you from time to time--a little scripting, saving, and smart spending can make them easier to handle.

The best thing you can do is avoid financial crisis by having money saved. Get some books from the library on getting out of debt and handle your money. They have lots of those plus ones on how to live frugally.
Saving for a rainy day is the best thing to do.
If your financial obstacle is from health care bills, then talk to the hospital and doctors. Often the bills are inflated and they can reduce them if asked.
