It depends what field you are interested in. The government has a lot of information on specific websites for reference. For instance, the Dept. of Energy has many tip sheets for best practices of energy management.

Another resource would be the equipment manufacturers. Check their websites and talk to the vendors. Sometimes they have detailed engineering books on their speciality that the vendors use.

One free book that I did find online is the Alfa Laval Pump Handbook. It arrived very quickly and I haven't been harassed by vendors since receiving it.
