The best thng I have found in my endeavors to refinish furniture is Strip-EEZ. (Walmart or Hardware stores) Apply it liberally. (Wear gloves) and use a putty knife to remove the paint, a toothbrush or other small brush for crevices and non-flat areas. You may have to repeat this a couple times if it has several layers. Once you have removed the paint, use a fine sand paper to remove residue left behind. Then steel wool and sand again. Wipe the piece down with a clean dry cloth to remove dust before applying new paint or varnish. I have tried other products but this one works well.

Zip strip gel and a putty knife it works. Be careful with anything like that or thinner. Read Haz Mat on label.

Rent a small sander, and wear a mask and goggles for protection.
