in response to jetdoc.i thnik you misunderstood me. i was actually asking for peoples experiences in airports so that i could identify problems that frequent fliers have. and in designing you actually really have to interview other people to know what should be done.

Some other things to take into consideration would be environmental impact of the airport, such as storm water runoff with deicing chemicals, the DEC is really cracking down on these things now, also noise abatement is a big factor especially when it involves a new airport being built in a populated area.
When designing runways you also have to include safety areas.
There is also passenger capacity to consider, examples would be parking, sanitary sewer capacity, food and hotels....
I could go on forever on this subject, I was just at a conference for work and left with a ton of knowledge.
here is a website that you could get a lot of research done, just by reading the news articles.

For a person that travels a lot, airports is a "second home".That would be my theme if I was to build one. Its amazing how some ppl spend hours and hours at the airport and even do their business at the airport. Most ppl even decided to have a certain airports for a definate lay overs just 'cause its convinient, cozy and less time consuming just to get from one place to another. Just cause its a place to fly, doesnt mean it has to be boring. But you dont wanna make it look like a chineese market either where you have too much of shopping complex inside.
Consider the varieties of passangers in your area :
1. If its a tourists area, most ppl whose on holiday vacations would bring their children,so a simple playground for kids would come in handy for parents to take their breath while waiting for their next flights.Or even when they have to be there early 'cause of the hotel doesn't allows late check out.
2. If its a business area,I dont think its fair that only the VIP lounge that has a reclining seats and extra services such as refresments. Business class couldn't fit everybody,so just cause they dont fly business class, doesn't mean they're not a loyal customer. Treat then the same, the only different is,they don't earn points.
3.If its an education area, then bringing more of technology touch woldn't hurt (internet booth- with pc and mac to those whose interested in designs, music centre -where they can download musics to their ipod or comp,bookstore-completes with copy, scan and prints media, photo printing booth-for them to print or sends pics to their family. That will allow the students to do more on their education wherever they are.In that case you'll also support the idea that education has no limits!

The last but not least,is REST area. I find this extremely important.I'm sure you all have witnessed how some people sits or sleeps on the carpet cause the airports doesnt have enough chair to sit on.It makes the airport looks like the streets of new York at the bronx. Therefore, provide extra booth where they can lay down or sleep while waiting.
In my experience,I have to stuck inside the airport cause I dont have the visa entry to the country that I layed over to.So, imagene spending a night on those chairs in the waiting room,it could brake your bones apart! It would be nice if you guys could come up with the first idea of having a lodge inside an airport for ppl who has more than certain hours waiting period.

Anyhow, GOOD LUCK !!!

If you are designing an airport...If it's for private aircraft... You need to clear it with the local town or city, and the FAA. The land should be almost level and the runways should have access to a North and South as well as and East & West runways for wind direction. Planes need to take off and land into the wind.
Have lots and lots of money cause you'll need to build a control tower and and administration building plus a parking lot with access roads..Lot of luck.

PS... Forget about a Commericial airport!

What size of an airport? GA or Large Hub? if your going to design a large hub, go with a couple of parallel runways, maybe 4 total. then add a crosswind runway or two. Have the terminal located in the middle of the airport with two runways on each side.DFW has an ok setup.

Baggage. I've noticed there is no sure way to prevent baggage from being stolen off the round-about carousel in Baggage Claim.
A theif can grab a bag and flee before its owner misses it. No airport I've ever been in checks ownership of bags exiting the building.
You would be well advised to give this matter a bit of consideration.

Look up some on Wikipedia. There are diagrams that show the general layout. One thing that will impress your teacher is to have two parallel runways next to each other. The inner one (closer to the terminal) is used for takeoffs and the outer for landings.

have you ever been to Frankfurt?
from a traveler's perspective, that's the worst ever made:
you always arrive from an international flight on one end and have to go (by moving walkways!!!) to the other end, passing customs on your way. I constantly miss my connecting flights there.
Denver on the other hand is a great example of what works well, having the shuttle train as public transport visible inside the terminal.

at least 3 runways, vectored differently so winds don't shut down the entire airport. Just don't model the airport after LGA!!

Wow! How original! Trying to get other people to do your work for you instead of doing it yourself. Where I come from, that's called CHEATING!

Your teacher doesn't want other people's ideas... He wants YOURS! What are you going to do if you manage to graduate this course, and actually have to do the work yourself in a real job?

Do a study on prevaling wind. Line up runways with this if possible.
