prolonged dry, cracked nose, particularly with loss of pigmentation, scabs or open sores should definitely be examined by your veterinarian. An ill animal will often have a warm, dry nose, and there are a host of dermatological (skin) problems that can be seen in this area, such as Pemphigus Foliaceus.
dogs, cats, horses, and other species are prone to sunburn (also known as "solar dermatitis") and subsequent skin cancer on noses, ear tips, and around eyes. He may just be needing sun block.
If your dog had distemper as a pup, that can also result in a dry cracking nose as he gets older.
I would get a sunblock form your pet supply or from your vet clinic. these are safe for his nose, and will promote healing as well.
Don't use people sun block, as they are the wrong PH
balance, and the fragrance will be irritating.
However, Avon's lip balm with aloe is a good ointment for him.

if out in the sun could be a sun burn, yes dogs get sun burns as well. Will need to add sunscreen and for now could use sunburn treatments as you would on a child.
another thing do you use plastic bowls? it may also be from the bowls as there are so many pores in plastic that bacteria can get into and can cause problems for canines.
