Rifle or pistol? Indoor or outdoor?
I've always been told (and so practice) taking a deep breath and slowly exxhaling just before making the shot.
Some people coach keeping only the sighting eye open, othere both eyes.
Start with a large target at a closer range, and work out and smaller.
Get a good telescopic sight and have an expert (at the range) sight it in for you.
Start with .22 cal. and work your way up to the larger stuff.
Shoot once a month, or regularly.

If you are shooting a large caliber rifle with medium to heavy recoil I suggest ear protection and a recoil pad. The noise and kick of firing a large caliber weapon cause you to flinch in anticipation as you pull the trigger. Get a good pair of earmuff-style ear protectors and a recoil pad for the stock of your gun and you will almost instantly become a more consistent shooter. Then you can use the traditional techniques such as squeezing (not pulling) the trigger, releasing your breath, shooting from a bench, etc. Practice, practice, practice.

You need to decide who you're going to shoot. Is it your wife or your mother-in-law?
The best pointers I can give you are:
- Make sure the gun is loaded, and
- Aim at the target.

Line the family up and start witht he bigger targets. By the time you get to the smallest target you aim will be perfect. Oh and remember to aim for the heart.
