Because human nature is more varied than you think. People will do what they must and what they can. A poor man will steal food if he is hungry enough. An angry man will strike out if he is angry enough. A scorned woman will do things she never imagined that she could do and will never remember those things she did.
Some people take what they need others are just greedy and a small few will suffer for the good of all.
The Bible can help children understand which person they are and can help an older person see what they have become.
I do love others, I do pray for my worst enemies, I do love myself but I am also at odds with these beliefs and always will be and that is why when angry I give them to God and that is why you need the Bible to tell you or REMIND you of this.

Aristotle told us that "what goes up, must come down". It was a pretty good concept and explained a lot, but it wasn't quite "right". Newton came along hundreds of years later with Principia Mathematica and his theory of gravity. It was a much better concept, explained a lot more, but it still wasn't quite "right". Then came Einstein and relativity. It was an even better concept, explained much, much more, but still wasn't quite "right". Now we're searching for quantum relativity... merging physics into one whole, elegant explanation that is "right". Each time science respected an old theory, but tossed it aside for a better one.
At first men did what was right in their own eyes. A pretty good concept, but not quite "right". Then came the Law, and the Prophets. A much better concept, but not quite "right". Then came Christ, who said the only rule was to "Love God, and love others as you love yourself." An even better concept, and the best we have at the moment. Unlike science, however, the Church doesn't honor old theories, but discard them to embrace the new. They cling to the old concept of the Law, with all the rules and guidelines that just aren't quite "right".
The rule of Love is too simple... and doesn't give the Church the ability to control it's people. Nor does it give those people the right to look down their noses at those who don't follow all their rules.
Christ said he would do away with all those rules. That he would replace the Law written in stone with another written in our hearts. The Church prefers stone. That's why they need the book.
To be a Christian means to follow Christ... When a man says he's a Christian, that doesn't mean he really is. There is a huge difference between serving the Church, and serving God.

I dunno bout anyone else, but my parents taught me that...before I could read... and neither one of them (at that time) was Christian. Seems this is common with parents... even those who don't have a religion.
I would have to say I show a common courtesy to everyone until I find out if they have respect or not... If they don't show respect, then I won't show any towards them. As for "loving" everyone... well, I can't say I LOVE everyone... so, we won't go there LOL
