Papillons are wonderful dogs, they are fierce companions, they tend to bond with one persn and are addamant about spending time with that person. My pap is particularly attached to my eldest daughter, the dog always sleeps with her and anytime my hubby or I go past her room she growls and barks. She's very protective, even when a stranger is talking to the younger kids, she'll stand between them and kind of mediate, just to make sure that nothing will happen to "her" kids.
They can be noisy, particularly if they are left alone for long periods of time, in our case she starts as soon as we leave the house, but what can you do? She's too cute.
They can also sometimes be difficult to house train, mine is two and still has accidents sometimes, sometimes she will pee on my daughter's bed if she sleeps over at a friends house or goes away for the weekend, which I can say is not an accident, but her way of telling her that she is displeased.
I can't stress socialization enough, puppy training classes, the works, mine is fear-aggressive with other dogs, this could have been different if she had been socialized better as a pup, but I got her when she was a year, so I missed out on some of the more important times.
She used to chew everything, but luckily I stay home most of the time and was able to train her. She's a great dog really, she likes to spend time with us, and is very intelligent, she sheds like crazy, but if you already have cats I'm sure you're used to hair in your food and what-not.
Good luck finding your perfect dog!

I think Papillions are fantastic. I knew nothing of the breed and received a 4 month old puppy back in March of this year. He bonded hardcore with me although has room in his heart for my DH and 2 daughters (10 and 13). He has made good friends with one of the cats (we call them Frick and Frack) and doesn't mind the other 2 cats at all. They're small like him.
I agree with the occasional difficulty with housetraining. We worked our way through that by putting him outside frequently through the day and praising him greatly with small treat pieces when he "goes potty". We (the family) use the same command whenever we put him out. At night, he goes in his kennel and nightly gets me up at least once to go outside and go potty. He's like a baby in that respect but I'm used to it.
You fall in love so quickly with these dogs! I'd get another one if it was offered to me but I love my "Radar" so very much, I'm not sure I'd have room in my heart for another. He's not overly barky but he is protective. He's not aggressive in any way (he's still unnuetered) but is fearful until given the opportunity to sniff a new person's hand and give them a "you're ok" lick. He's very kissy but that may just be my dog and my love of giving and receiving kisses. He is smart as a whip. He pays attention, follows me everywhere, stays pretty close by when off the leash and comes when called.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this breed. I've grown up with dogs and before now felt that a shitzu was one of the best breeds out there all around. Radar has changed my opinion and I'm really looking forward to the years he and I have ahead of eachother. I would encourage you to check into this breed. You have a new best friend out there waiting to grab hold of your heart!

I have shown and handled Papillions for years, friend was a breeder, they are in the spaniel family which make them calmer and more willing to please than something in the terrier group, they are one of the top obedience dogs in the country, very smart, some can be a little yappy, but giving them a job helps, obedience training, hurdles,an active little dog that wants to please.good choice

They are great dogs, but fragile. It's best to make sure that the couch/bed aren't too high for the dog, because it's been known that a Papillon can injure their legs from something as simple as jumping off the bed.
I preferably love this breed, and would own one, if my hubby-to-be wasn't fascinated with Mastiffs. (The poor Papillon would get crushed).
Here is some breed specific information:

I am living with 2 of them belonging to another family memeber. I will say this. They bark an awful alot. This might be able to be remedied by training i suppose
