I have a black cat named drist which means "dark elf"
I love it because it is unique and I have never heard anyone else with that cat name.

I personally do not like names like 'fluffy' and 'fido'...so I don't really go by 'appearences'. And for cats, I seem to favor names that end with 'y' or 'ie'. My cats are Joey, Lucy, Molly and I rescued a couple of strays and named them Lennie and Tori (ok, that one was for appearences...she was a tortie!)
You might need to wait until kitty comes home-a name has to fit an animal. My cat Lucy didn't have a name for almost a week!
We take in strays alot and I've been naming them after characters/actors from my favorite TV shows and movies. Right now, the puppies I rescued are called Elliot and Olivia (from Law & Order:SVU).

Halloween... we named our cat this, we found him in the woods and he was beaten up very badly. We took him to the vet and got him fixed up. We decided to keep him and strangely he was also black and it was halloween, so we thought the name suited him. He was a great pet! Sadly after having him for 5 years, he died of pneumonia last year :(

I think Shadow or Midnight are two good names for black cats.
