I've actually looked this up on Word Origin. No one knows. There are rumors and two really good stories, but no one knows. There's the For unlawful Carnal Knowledge story, false. There's the Fornication Under Consent of the King story, false. The last one is the greatest. It involves the translation of a play about a monk who has sex with all of the women in a village and the original word sounded like fu*k, but that story's false too.

I've heard it is an acronym, for unlawful carnal knowledge. I don't know if that true.
There is an interesting related story I used to hear about how the finger got associated with that word. It was in a diamond commercial on the radio all the time here.

F=for
U=unlawful
*= carnal
K= knowledge
This word with the "er/ers" on the end was targeted for adulterers. If I remember correctly, when people were caught in the crime of Adultery, the town would put them in the town square with a red A on thier forehead and call them fu*#ers.
Might be wrong about the origin..... but the meaning is correct

It is a slang expression that stems from a law on the books in merry old England that people would be arrested (and probably still are) for doing in public:
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

Here is the story I have heard but I have no idea if it is true.
In the early 19th century when bobbies (cops) arrested women for prostitution the charge was technically "unlawful carnal knowledge" ... on the arrest reports under the blank for "reason for arrest" it became common to use the acronym f.u.c.k. (for unlawful carnal knowledge).

14th century England, the peasants had to get permission from the King in order to engage in sex, thus Fornication Under Consent of the King.
