You said it is resistant to treatment, but my husband has had wonderful results with Clobetasol Propionate. He uses the liquid solution for his head breakouts & the gel for other breakouts on his arms & legs. When he is consistant he can catch a breakout early & it's like he has no skin condition at all. This is by prescription only so if you haven't already tried it ask your Dr.

Effective shampoos with selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, are quite helpful. You can use 2% ketoconazole shampoo first for the treatment and then for the control of the condition. In many cases Tar shampoos are quite effective. So you can choose some over the counter medicines first and if they are not effective you may choose to visit your doctor for a more powerful medicine. If your case is severe, you can use low-potency glucocorticoid solutions or gels after shampooing your hair with the above mentioned shampoos. Pimecrolimus, 1% cream is one of these steroid compounds. Notice that you cannot use steroid compounds on your skin for long term because it causes atrophy and is not reversible.

Some years back I was given a tar like shampoo that smelled bad but took care of the problem. A shampoo recently recommended to me was Nizoral which you can get over the counter. Use it regularly or every time you shampoo for best results.
When I have a flare up I dab witch hazel on my scalp and it feels refreshing and comforting.

Seborrheic dermatitis is dandruff of the skin. Here's what Doctor Jerome Z. Litt says:
Like hundreds of skin ailments,no one knows what causes seborrheic dermatitis. Its a chronic and recuuring condition;flare-ups at odd moments are common.
Treatment of seborrheic dermatitis is directed at minimizing the sympotoms, rather than curing the disorder permanently(there is no cure).Persisent, regular, and repeated treatment should give you control over this annoying ailment.
Suggestions:
1.Shampoo frequently--daily if possible(Neutragena T-Gel,Ionil T-Gel,Denorex Tar Based,Nizoral{prescription or non-prescription},Sebutone,
Polytar Shampoos).
2.Since tha patches of seborrheic dermatitis are prone to secondary infection by bacteria and other germs, keep your skin clean by washing carefully and regularly by using Lowilla cake or
a cleanser like Cetaphil Lotion...it has to be very mild, and it's better if it's soap-free and unscented,no artificial colorings added.Cetaphil is the best.
3.Keep cool;avoid stress and emotional tension.
4. Get plenty of rest.
5. Eat a well-balanced diet.
6. Avoid greasy foods and alcoholic beverages.
7.If you are overweight, lose those extra pounds(the dermatitis hides in skin folds).
8.Avoid greasy cosmetics and oily moisturizers.
9.Do not scratch(this leads to infections because of skin tears).
10.Small amounts of sunlight usually help, but do not overexpose yourself to the sun's potentially harmful rays(sunblocks should be non-greasy).
The time-honored topical medications used are sulfur, tar, salicylic acid, and cortisone creams and lotions. Many of these are prescription items and you need to follow the dermatologist's directions,
A few of the over-the-counter remedies the dermatologist would suggest for milder cases are the shampoos and over-the-counter strength cortisone cream like Cortaid.
For the stubborn variety of this ailment, other methods, injections, prescription stregnth cortisone creams and other topical medications may be neccessary.
