I am a contractor, and I hire people to help me work in New York. I am a big fan of immigrants, but LEGAL immigrants. Simply put, I do not hire illegal people to work for me. If you can't prove that you are a citizen of the United States, I won't hire you.

Do I make less of a profit than my competitors? Not really. Here's why.

If you hire someone who is breaking the law (in other words, an ILLEGAL immigrant), they are already a crook (they are ILLEGAL - get it???), and so, what makes you think they will do a proper job? As a result, you have to redo the job which eats away at your profit margin.

On the other hand, hiring LEGAL people usually results in a better job done more quickly, and so, your profits are up.

I treat my workers fairly and do not exploit them. In turn, they work their butts off. It's a symbiotic relationship. I charge slightly higher rates, but people know I do quality work, so they hire me.

Still think the economy needs illegals?

I applaud you for hiring only legal immigrants. I agree that they are illegal and should not be hired, but the fact is that they are hired are there already exists a large number of illegals. Why are they here? The primarily incentive is because there are people who are willing to give them jobs. Most of them end up doing really low-paying jobs such as house cleaning and farming - most of these are jobs that citizens will not do, and most legal immigrants do not apply for. As for quality of work by immigrants (illegal or legal), that would entirely depend on the individual - some are qualified through education and experience and others have the ability and drive to learn. If businesses are offering them jobs and are not reporting them, perhaps they do contribute something to the economy.

The economy benefits from illegal workers. However, the economy does not need illegals, it needs willing workers.

I read a current proposal for a temporary worker programto make hiring of foreign workers easier for businesses and holding those businesses responsible for their them. This proposal would give these people temporary legal status if hired by businesses for jobs that NO AMERICAN WANTSS. Everybody wins.

P.S.:
The issue of health care costs for illegals is another matter entirely. Iagree with Randy C's idea and...totally ignore Dr Pedro. If the existing illegals in the country were legalized in some form, they would be able to purchase health insurance and so will gain access to primary and preventive health care, which may be cheaper when compared to federal taxes spent on emergency room visits.

Illegal immigration has been heavily billed by pro-immigration advocates as The Answer to america's labor cost problems.
What they don't tell you is that you end up paying extra at the back end through higher municipal services costs, everything from free childcare to jail costs, the pro-growth advocates got their ambition on to just open things up wide open, and most americans are increasingly against the idea as well as its' proponents. I think legal immigration is a tolerable and acceptable practice, the politicians and 'representatives' that have been pushing for free-for-all, bum's rush immigration policy need to be recalled, and good legislation to clarify and reinforce lawful immigration practices needs to be adopted post-haste, not only to protect the interests of those already struggling in business to make/meet costs, but also in the interest of public safety, quality of public schools, and stable tax rates.

No, we don't need the ILLEGALS. You are right to hire only the legal immigrants. Our local newspaper recently did a study as how much money the illegal immigrants bring into our county and how much the illegals cost our county. They contributed $765 million a year and cost $817 million a year (in welfare services, etc.). Something don't add up there. So personally, I don't think the economy needs illegals. Now these stats are just for one county in the State of North Carolina. There are 100 counties in our state and if even half of them have stats like my county does, we just keep going deeper and deeper in the hole here.

We need legal immigrants. The US economy will suffer if Illegals continue to come at the current rate. No economy can create 2-4 million new low skill jobs a year, while it continues to send low skill jobs to foreign countries and provide benefits, services and jobs for all the illegal & legal kids born here.

If more illegals were creating new businesses and providing jobs rather than expecting and taking jobs, the economy might stand a chance.

At least the US Economy will be flushed down a clean toilet...

Haven't I seen this question a million times? One more time,I guess.

Yes,I believe illegals do make a difference to our economy. Some people are like you ,but the majority don't care how legal a person is.As long as no felonies have been commited and you can pass a drug test, people will hire you, legal or not.

I wouldn't try to tell you how to run your job.Thats your perogative. What you do and how you do it are your business.Good luck to you.

I know alot of businesses profit from illegal workers. They pay less and alot have no benefits. Most of the illegal community no nothing of OSHA or the labor board. All they know is to work and make as much money as they can.The employers know this and take advantage of it.

As long as illegals keep spending money here in our country and keep paying their taxes (tax id#s),then what's to say that they are hurting our economy?I think they support our economy and do help make a difference. But thats just my opinion.

And why won't illegals do a good job at work?I'm sure they want to keep their job just as much as the legal man does. That might make them work twice as hard, cause they know they came here to make money and do better for themselves.

I don't really know.I'm just tired if arguing the subject of economy over and over.Especially when no one cares.

There are an estimated 12 million people here illegally. Do you not think there would be a major impact on the economy if they all up and left? Get real! You say you just charge a little more. What if that was the case in every industry? The restaurants charge more, hotels charge more, farmers charge more, your gardener charges more, gas stations charge more, your nanny charges more, get the picture? We need them as much as they need us. Why can't we just make it easier to get work permits/visas, so that people are able to come here and work legally. Do you truly think people that come here to make a better life for their families are "crooks"? They come to work. If they wanted to steal for a living they could stay with their families in their own country.

So we're generalizing here and saying that they're lazy and don't perform quality work? In case you haven't noticed (and you haven't) thats a STEREOTYPE!!! You said that you don't hire undocumented immigrants so how would you know the work they perform. And crook? I'm sure some of your citizens have committed a crime before. If we judged everyone's character on the basis of whether or not they committed a crime, then eveyrone in jail would be screwed. That is your logic, right? Well, way to have a pessimistic view. And undocumented immigrants work in other fields besides construction so you can't judge the economy on that one aspect.

no...and no...

im a contractor also and all of my work comes from word of mouth referals because i do nothing but quality work...i dont leave a job until i am satisfied...thats usually more demanding than the client...illegals dont care about quality, they just want quick money and move on to the next thing...

the whole culture of moving somewhere else to work instead of doing something quality where you are and making a demand for your product is why illegals are here...too many people would have something done cheap and try to fix it later than do it right the first time and live happily with it forever...

The politicians who claim that illegals are what the economy need are themselves crooks and should be throw out of office for violating the constitution of the US. These "dip sticks" in congress and the other crooks in the corporate world who hire illegals, should spend their times in prison. May I suggest that we allow the illegals to replace these moroons. No one ought to be here illegally. How many workers are required yearly? Say One Million farm workers yearly. By quoter system, get them from Bangladesh, Rwanda, Liberia, Vietnam, Mexico etc, etc. No one area should be allowed to crash into US like we know it now. There are 12 Million illegals, they can go and in their places replace with 12 million legals. The legals would be screened in their homelands. They will have permits for say Three year period or as many years as is determined. They come alone without wivews or husbands. At the expiration of their terms, they may apply for residency. The copies of those applications would be forwarded to the applicants home US liason office with recommendations by their hires, police records and even landlord reports from which determination would be based. While in the US, these folks can better their lots by subsidized tuitions by their hires. They should try and acquire the three "Rs" and basic civic lesson about America. Costs to be shifted to their employers. There should be Holding Places where these legals would be received. On no condition should the crooked corporations be allowed to hire outside of these establishment and those who need workers should apply stating the number they needed. The companies would sign undertaking to be responsible for them and upon request by the govt. to produce them. The companies need to be monitored by the govt. because the workers taxes must reach the govt. Companies can recommend workers for extension, for resident permits which would factor during the evaluation of such a candidate's application for change of status upon return to their home country at the expiration of their terms. It is stupid and a rape of our intelligence to even think about giving any consideration to any illegal except to round them up. If so, may we grant safe passage to other illegals like drug dealers, counterfeiters, smugglers who actually sell their smuggled goods cheaper to the people? It is criminal what some of these criminal congress men and women are doing. Keep watch America as they rally with and champion the cause for the illegals, vote them out next election.

well, there are some boundaries to your question, like for example, countries which grants transit visas...

An immigrant (illegal or legal...legal tourists but illegible workers) automatically purchases products within (for example) your country. Increases needs.

But in terms of work here is what we call probationary period for everyone.

So, to make it short, illegals maybe helpful if their intent is to be legal and lives a decent life- and if they are not fugitives.
