Looking at a smoker and looking at the average fat slob next to me, I'd say that lung disease isn't as imminent as heart disease when you consider all of the other weight-associated problems (diabetes, etc.). Prove me wrong if you got the studies to back it up, but for right now, I say, smoking is better than fat ole Betsy gorging herself on ice cream and pork chops!

Both are bad. Cardiovascular disease (heart disease) is the leading cause of death but lung cancer is the number of killer of all cancers.

Although, statistically speaking obesity is highly correlated with heart disease which kills more people than anything else, it doesn't mean it's the only cause of heart disease. There is a plethora of conditions that cause heart disease and smoking is one of them. To assert your position, and for it to be correct, you would have to prove that the combined deaths caused by lung cancer (which is primarily caused by smoking), chronic lower respiratory diseases, and heart disease deaths indirectly caused by smoking do not exceed the number of deaths caused directly from obesity related conditions (follow me?). That is extremely difficult to prove because when a person dies of heart disease, the coroner's report does not state "cause of death was heart disease which was caused by smoking", it just states death by heart disease. The same is true of obesity related fatalities. That's how statistics can be vastly innaccurate in many ways.

Just between you and me, I would venture to say that you are probably correct in your assertion (especially with the booming obesity epidemic and the multitude of fatal conditions (including cancer) associated), but lets just say I wouldn't bet on it without the hard facts.

If you ever to find such studies I would be very interested in the results. To my knowledge, there hasn't been any study presented that is yet that specific, only estimates. Great question though.

Just because you don't smoke doesn't mean you have to become a fat slob. Some people just don't know when to stop eating regardless if they smoke or not
