I am presuming you are American.

Every US Embassy and consulate has a list of lawyers who speak English and are familiar with working with Americans. Here is the American Citizen Services page for our consulate in Hamburg.

Email them and ask for their lawyers' list - they should be able to send it to you by email. Then you can call, write, or email one of the lawyers who specializes in family law. That lawyer will be able to help you get a copy of the death certificate.

FInd a local lawyer who speaks German and have him/her write to the German equivalent of the Department of Vital Statistics.

I know one here in Ill. who might help you if you can't find one on your own. Email me if you want her name.
