The hurricane victims are like the hard luck relatives everybody has but doesn't want to think about. They invite them to holiday dinners because they feel obligated, give them a meal, then stick them in a corner, hoping they will just sit there and be quiet. Or better still go away.
The news casters and the government paid as much attention to the disasters as they believed the rest of America could tolerate.
The victims have been settled in a corner and are trying to get by the best they can.
The news people have moved on to the next thing that will give them better ratings and are hoping the hurricane victims will just go away.
I'm not saying it's right, but that's what's going on.

Everyone was still reeling from Katrina when Rita and Wilma hit. I think the reason is because the areas affected by Rita and Wilma were much more prepared than certain areas of LA, which is why that is all you hear about. The MS Coastal Region was prepared and way more on top of things - and have been ignored by the media. What people tend to forget is that it was not Katrina herself that caused the damage in NO, but the after effects of the levies breaking. If the LA government had put half the money into levy repair that they spend on Mardi Gras and tourism in general, things would have been allot different.

Ok, now I will admit that the news skews everything. But...Katrina displaced and ENTIRE CITY. Nearly a MILLION people, and the government was in no way capable (and should be in no way capable) of handling a disaster of that magnitude as if it could happen any day. Katrina got a lot of attention and a lot of money. I can't imagine that Rita caused even close to as much damage. Not saying that people who lost their homes are any less deserving, but the entire country was moved to help the victims of Katrina because of the magnitude of damage. I cant help thinking that it is unfair to expect the entire country to freak out every time there is a hurricane.

Because Rita's land fall was in a less populated area, and it came after Katrina. Notice how all the reports about Katrina are centered around New Orleans when the whole region was devastated?

I noticed the same thing. I also noticed that when reference is made to Hurricane Katrina, often the stories about Hurricane Rita are lumped into the Hurricane Katrina coverage. I wonder why that is the case myself.

all the towns like in mississippi for example --some being completely demolished, like biloxi, are completely ignored, they only talk about New Orleans.
i think that it's because news goes on to the next big thing and NO gets attention because their particular plight is still interesting to readers or watchers. In reality, I don't think many people give a crap that we did and will continually be pounded by killer storms. We have to worry about the next one now. Soon, there will be so many disastrous killer storms that no one will be paying any attention to any of it's victims.

same reason mississippi was ignored during katrina. it was worse then katrina my friend lives there whole towns have been destroyed and no one cared. why because louissiana is more popular and the government does not want to show the whole country how disorganized this government really is.

i imagine it is unhappy to be in search of compensation for that because each and every individual remains with out a lot. in case you weren't waiting to do it with a contented heart you shouldn't have finished it. No good deed is going disregarded. Be grateful so that you could do some thing. let the grins on the faces of those you helped be thanks adequate.
