i used to have this problem too...then one day i was around someone who doesnt (or rarely) swear so i actually started following suit...i found that it came naturally...my best guess? surround yourself with people who dont.....if you were trying to quit smoking you wouldnt necessarily surround yourself with people or crowds that smoke

I was never really into cursing. I always figured people who curse simply lack the capacity to come up with a real insult. This may seem strange, but look up stuff in the dictionary and find words of equal devastation to replace.
My favorite is "lipstick wearing feltch monkey".
It translates as a very ugly person with to much make-up on kissing the buttocks of another monkey.
Consider coming up with things equally offensive. This way the use of cursing will no longer be required as your only retort to an unloved comment.

Charge yourself a quarter a swear and once a month give the cash to charity. You'll be breaking yourself of a habit, but helping someone out in the mean time.

Stick a dollar in a jar every time you swear. Enlist friends and family to help you in this, by calling you on it, and making sure the jar is getting full!! After awhile you'll get sick of losing all your money to your bad habit and it'll stop! Then when you realize you've gone a whole day or two without putting a dollar in, bust it open and reward yourself with something pretty!!!

Learn some curse words in another language that no one will recognize, and use them. Soon you'll see how silly it all is and stop. Here's one suggestion - "koo-see-mow". It isn't even a curse word, but it has a noble history. During the winter Olympic games in Japan one year, the Russian hockey coach was cursing away, and the Japanese noticed that the Russian team was scoring, when their coach cursed. So they thought is was a lucky word. In actuality it wasn't Koo-see-mow, but hui suh-neem, which means "**** it" in Russian.

Before speaking/swearing think about what it is you're trying to convey. Use your words, increase your vocabulary, and think about the image you want to have for yourself. Most people who swear a lot, especially women are considered extremely low class. All you need then is a beer and a leather belt with your name on it to complete the trashy picture.

You know what I'm not sure because I have the same problem and I feel so ugly about it.I know that when I hear people swear more than me it makes me not want to swear anymore. Anyways, I think I'm going to read what others gave you for advice.

I was once like you years ago - bad negative thoughts leading to foul mouth everyday - purged all of these when i began attending church and mixing with the right sort of people. Now i don't even think bad words - it is insulting to one's integrity, character as a person whenever an obscenity is uttered. I even avoid being near to people who mouth vulgarities and swear words - it's very annoying and unsettling.

I did it by having my friend Peter punch me in the stomach when I swore. He is the type of person who is nice enough to hit me really hard. I stopped swearing pretty quickly.

THINK before you open your mouth. You can do it IF you really want to. It will take some time, but again if it is something you want -- go for it and don't beat yourself up if you slip -- just learn from it and next time try a little harder. Before you know it, you will be very proud of yourself.
