He means Dominica NOT the Dominican Republic! I'll just say the island is much more "pristine" and less developed than most of the other Caribbean islands; I believe the only way to get there is via boat because I don't believe the island has an airport (if they do it doesn't support jets-aka charter flights of tourists). The island, gets cruise ship traffic, but other-wise isn't full of American tourists like other places. The island caters more towards eco-tourism strongly- ie, hiking, scuba, etc. Just guessing you're curious about the island because of the recent "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie? Hopefully you'll get a better answer from Mega Nic, if he sees your question, who lives on the island and chimes in from time to time explaining his home a lot better than anyone else can.

Ignore all the other answers so far- I think they are all mistaking the Dominican Republic for Dominica; Dominica IS safe, the Dominican Republic is questionable.

You may also want to click on to my user name of porthuronbilliam. On around the 6th page is a question about things to do in Dominica. Mega Nic answered the question as well, you may then try clicking on to Mega Nics user name to try to pose the question directly to him.

Just looking again, everyone besides JahJah and NightHowler seems to confusing the Dominican Republic for the island of Dominica.

PEOPLE WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC....
A lot of you are mistaking Dominica with the Dominican Republic, Dominica does not have resorts....there are small hotels and inns the largest having less than 100 rooms.

Pristine and beautiful....for adventure lovers. No malls and very limited white sand beaches but there are beaches. Rivers and waterfalls, hiking, scuba diving, hot pools.

Wow...a lot of people can't tell the difference between the Dominican Republic and the little island of Dominica. Dominica has rugged coastline, a few rugged beaches, waterfalls, Boiling Lake, lots of places to hike, etc. I would like to stay at Calibishie Lodges or Apartments. They look out to the village of Calibishie and the ocean.

The resorts are very nice, but the island itself is pretty run down. Some parts looked 3rd world!
I went last year to the north part of the island. The weather was fantastic & the people working at the resorts were very friendly.
You shouldn't really leave the resorts unless you're on an excursion. It is probably not the safest place for a tourist to wander around!
I went white water rafting when I was there, it was absolutely amazing. I would definitely recommend it!!!

Best vacation I ever had. Stayed at Majestic Colonial Punta Cana, most beautiful place. The pool is 1400 ft long (spans the property). Many things to do & see. Lots of restaurants. Fun for families or just singles.

Resorts are fancy but the people are pretty rude. I wouldn't go again.
