How often has a Hindu tried to push their faith on you? or a Buddhist? How about a Jew or a Rastafarian? Pagans typically knock on your door and try and show you the truth?

Why do people generalize all religions when not all proselytize.

If Sam really has so much "reason", then why is he wearing that silly looking Indiana Jones hat?

There are many ways to categorize religions. One way is tribal vs. universal. Tribal religions are those which people are born into and which in most cases don't even accept converts. Judaism is an exception- it is both. One can be born a Jew or could convert.

Of those which are universal, there are those which are exclusive and inclusive. Those which are inclusive believe their way is not the only way. Typically, those people who are exclusive believe they are the only ones who are saved. These are typically the ones which do proselyze.

I'm a non pushy nominal Christian, but I understand the need of those who do proselyze. If you saw someone who swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills lieing on the ground, would you simply say , "Well, they wanted to kill themselves, so I won't call 911." ?

I really don't feel that the majority of even Christians proselytize. I work with mostly Christians who are aware that I am pagan and they don't bother to try to sell their religion to me. They realize that I am just as likely as any other devoutly religious person to change my religious beliefs. We respect each other and often ask questions and learn abut each other's faiths. We don't bother debating who is "right".

Unfortunately the "pushers" give the rest of us a bad name. They are rude and vocal and disrespect everyone who doesn't agree with them. They leave a lasting negative impression. Considering that they are hurting their cause more than helping it, you would think that they would wake up and see that their tactics aren't working. Of course that would require objectivity and humility....

Buddism is more a philosiphy of living as are the majority of the Eastern "Religions". You've a good point about this issue...we do tend to lump all the Christian Sects together when it comes to attempting to get people to convert/believe. The reality of it is that to generalize is usually not good. PEACE!

If you are so worried about it, maybe you could help get the proselytizing types to quit it. They aren't making religious beliefs look very rational or pleasant to be around. (Sorry, but people generalize, what can I tell you?)

You cannot generalize the "convert the masses" aspect, true, but there are many aspects that you can make general statements about ... such as the lunacy of living life according to faith and not reason.

because stereotyping makes it easy to divide people, which is what the pushers are really doing---dividing people.
