they're both capable but you have to keep them separate and give them something to mimic or they'll just squawk at each other

I have heard that a great way to teach a bird to talk is to put it with another bird that already talks--if this is true, you're well on your way. Your two birds are probably pals and, as such, will want to communicate with each other. Generally though, to teach a bird to talk, you take it out of its cage (its territory), have him/her perch on your hand facing you, and say what you would like the bird to say in a clear sharp voice (not yelling) and make sure you make eye contact. Remember, birds are like small children in that they have very short attention spans and should be rewarded for even pretending to listen to you (with a food treat or a scratch on the head--whatever you think will motivate your bird). Good luck. PS The males tend to be better talkers than the females--an innate need to show off or something... :)

I think only male cockatiels talk, and you have to be very repetitive, my cockatiels cage was out side near the dog and after a while he started to bark because that's what he had been around, he also likes to say "hello Charlie" and "wotcha doin" because that's what everyone says when they walk past the cage.

For the birds to talk it depends on their age. Age is key. If they are young then they will for sure learn when they are in different cages in different rooms and they will communicate with each other and they will talk.
