We have been trying to teach my 5 year old colors, numbers, and letters for 3 years. He still doesn't reconize any colors, numbers or letters. He has been in school since he was 3 and has made some progress but not much. He's behind all other 5 year olds. He has also been in speech therapy for 2 years, having been diagnosed with a devlopmental delay.

When was the last time you had his vision checked. Find out more about the developmental delay. What does it affect and how?

Here are some sites that can help you. Hope they help. Oh, here's a suggestion. See if there is a support group of parents who are dealing with the same thing in your area. If not, consider starting one. You never know the wealth of information and support you get from such a group. I did that when my son was diagnosed with ADD and Emotional Learning Disabled by the 3rd grade. NOTE: My son is now 19 and is going to college.

Empower yourself! Be encouraged!

While your son has been diagnosed with a developmental delay, which may account for his problems, I don't think it's acceptable that he's been allowed to lag so far behind in his education without any intervention by the school. I think you either need to consult his teacher or doctor and ask that he be referred to someone (perhaps an educational psychologist) who will give him the support he needs and communicate with you on his progress.

While many teachers are very good with supporting children who need a little extra help, some just dismiss these pupils and it's up the parents to advocate their child's rights. I wouldn't go in with guns blazing (not at first, anyway!) but ask what's being done to help your son and where could you possibly go to access more support for him.

Well, you said developmental delay. That would explain a whole lot. I'm not trying to be rude. Was he diagnosed early? Maybe he also has a learning disability.

Hon have his vision and hearing checked, not just by your reg. doctor but by a specialist.
Also have you considered testing for "Dyslexia" One of my sons had the same problem.Luckily in second grade his teacher was in tuned to his problems, she moved him to the front of the room near her desk.He improved remarkably,She suggested having the three tests done.He was tone deaf and had a slight vision problem "mild dyslexia" With a small hearing aid, glasses and a little effort from his teacher and us working with him at home he soon was near the same level as the others in his class. He's now a grown man and a father and doing quite well!

And to "thickchick" your comment was very rude and hurtful.
I have only one thing to say"KARMA"

what type of delay? you can continue the process and if you do it daily and with patience the information is in there... accessing it is where they usually have problems use different methods then the school remember he's one of many and one on one time isn't given daily in school .... speak slowly facing him so mouth and tongue placement is seen,,, here's a free site that you can use to work with a b c's and numbers sometimes a new method is needed to help them...

Has he been tested with ADD or ADHD? If he is tested and it comes back neg. He just may be slower than the rest, and that is something we have to except. When talking about his problems don't do it in front of him. That discourages them even more. Good Luck.

You have your answer. You can try calling Depelchin Children's Center, they are good with teaching kids that are having trouble learning their school stuff.
Good luck!
