I love weddings. I had so much fun doing my own and I've helped with several others here and there. I wonder what it would take to become a wedding planner. I done a little research and have the basics already but what they say in the books and websites differs greatly from real life. That I know. I know things would start slow and I would have to invest a little to get going but are there any other wedding planners out there that could give me some advice or helpful start up tips?

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How To Start A Wedding Planning Business by Cho Phillips, Sherrie Wilkolaski
* Start Your Own Wedding Consultant Business: Your Step-By-Step Guide to Success by Eileen Figure Sandlin
* FabJob Guide to Become a Wedding Planner by Catherine Goulet
* How to Start a Home-Based Event Planning Business by Jill Moran
* Start Your Own Event Planning Business: Your Step by Step Guide to Success by Krista Turner

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

It's your choice, but I highly disgaree. Wedding planning is a huge pain in the butt! We planned our wedding perfectly, but I wouldn't want to do it again. Every week there was something that had to be done. If you really want to do it, keep in mind that it is a very time-consuming job. You won't have much of a social life. Women get crazy around the time of their weddings and you will have to take the brunt of that, too. And you will be on call - sometimes 24/7, depending on what's happening. Sounds like a drag to me. Good luck!

I know a wedding planner. What he did was work at a wedding store to get started and once he knew the business, he bought out another store and started his own. It's working for him...

If you want to deal with Brizillas and teary eyed mother of the brides--more power to you! I could never do that job (I am a corporate meeting planner).
