You can try setting the Sensitivity higher from the menus. This makes the camera more sensitive to light. But it also may introduce some picture "noise" often seen as tiny color specks or graininess.

Also in Program mode, you can increase the EV Compensation (Exposure Value), which causes the image to come out brighter. The menu is shown as a range of + and -. Try the highest plus setting.

Try setting the AE Metering to Matrix. This makes the camera consider the light levels in the whole pic, not just the center.

Then try White balance to Automatic.

Some digicams have accessory flashes that can improve the flash range. Check with Pentax to see if anything is available.

Beyond those ideas, you may need a different camera. This one may be incapable (although 4 ft seems extremely low), or defective. The camera's flash is rated for 10 to 17 feet.
