It seems like most christians dont understand atheists and most atheists dont understand religions. so i want everyone to explain as briefly but accurately as possible a different belief from their own.

I'm appalled by the idea that you are limiting your faux open-mindedness to Christianity and Atheism. By this, you are only recognizing Christianity as a true religion, which is, in fact, quite narrow-minded.
There's no great struggle between Christians and Atheists... Atheists have a substantive, if not total, lack of belief in anything. "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" - literally.
Now, a good Agnostic would question Christianity and seek validation.. along with other various religions.. and with questions come conflict.
And then, of course, you've left out Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Wicca , Hindu... etc etc... all true and valid faiths.
An Atheist would not care about these either... due to the utter lack of belief.
With your question alone, you've proven you're not Atheist at all, but a budding Agnost. Now just open your mind and comprehend the other options, and maybe you'll get somewhere.

I don't know what religion I would be associated with, don't really have one, but I do know, having been raised a catholic, that they believe that Mary got preggo without having sex, that the red sea was parted, and that Jesus was killed and then 3 days later he was resserected(sorry, about the spelling), and that if you don't ask for forgiveness you will burn in hell! Oh, don't forget that they also think that children born to 2 loving parents that have descided marriage is just a religeous ceremony and thus passed up the opportunity to take part are damned, that innocent little babies are born with sins, oh gosh I could go on forever...oh wait don't forget they think a child is better off being born unwanted, unloved, and uncared for than not being born at all....

I never know the difference between atheist and agnostic, and I don't really know what I am either...
But I know 2 people quite opposite, and I'm in the middle. Let me explain :
My grand-mother is catholic. She has faith, she belive in god, in the virginity of Mary, in evething the bible says, and she goes to church every day.
I can't have a religious discussion with her because ... she just know that she's right, so she can't really explain her beliefs, she just believes...
On the other hand, my fiancé believe in humanity. He doesn't think there is any spiritual thing that rules us. He thinks that everything can be explain with science, even if now we don't have the technology to explain everything. He believes in humanity, and hopes one day in the future humanity will be in peace, without war or anything. He'll do humanitary vounteer work because he thinks man should help man.
And like I said, I'm in the middle. I don't believe in the bible, nor in the coran, nor anything writen by human hand... I don't accept the fact that some men can decide what is good or not, what is true or false, for the rest of the human kind.
But I think there are some interesting theory in some religion, or should I say mythology. I like the Native American culture, as well as teh Celtic culture, or the Japonese culture. I belive there are some "entities", not god, but maybe some spirits that exist in our world.
Like my grand-mother, I believe that without proof, but like my fiancé, I think that one day man will have enough science to prove that.
I need to believe in something, it's my way of staying zen, without stress.
I hope it wasn't too long for you to read that ;)

I am a Catholic.
The belief: Christ is present, body and blood, soul and divinity, in the sacrament of the Eucharist. We are truly fed with the substance of God when we partake of this sacrament at the altar during Mass. I believe this because in John's Gospel, Jesus says (paraphrased): "I am the bread of life...whomever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have life within them and I will raise them up on the last day." The original greek words used in this gospel for the word "eat" translate into modern english as "bite" or "gnaw". Why else would people say, "this teaching is too hard" and leave Him?

was raised christian
christianity: beleives that everyone who doesnt believe as they do and other sects will go to hell.
Islam: degrades women a few shades more than a christian does, insists on being of love and peace, and treats anyone that doesnt agree like sh!t
Atheism: assumes they are right, but in all reality nobody knows so they could be wrong. some atheists can be just as closed minded as some christian fundamentalists.

Christians believe in God, athiests don't. Religion is the belief in a higher power. Since athiesm isn't actually a belief, but a non-belief, its not a religion, so can't be in the same category as a religion.

An atheist denies the existence of God. Christians believe God is the Father of the world and sent His son Jesus into the world to pay for our sins.

I don't celebrate the holidays or anything that is Pagan related. Most, not all, religions celebrate the holidays, even knowing that they originated from Paganism. So my belief is that's its wrong, while just about every other religion thinks its o.k. Even non believers celebrate the holidays and if ask why, most will say because it has nothing to do with religion.

Your problem is in your first added statement. You say you were raised a Christian. Try becoming a Christian and then you will see the difference yourself

i am christian and i believe that God created the world and has power over all of our decisions. He loves us very much and wants the best for us if only we believe in Him and come to Him with our troubles. Since i have become a Christian my life has improved greatly when i pray to Him for direction.
