I just graduated highschool and am considering to be an art major. My perception of the artist is just of a social deviant who attempts to be deep, but comes off as being superficial. I don't want to become like that. I don't really admire others' works, but I enjoy painting. I'm not deeply passionate about it though, but I recognize painting as my greatest talent. Any advice.

If you don't really admire other artists' works, and aren't deeply passionate about making art, you're probably not much of an artist, so don't even waste the professors' time.

Why don't you become an art critic? The world needs more of those.

Well first things first... Deviance is not always a negative it is just deviating from the norm, which could be described another way as more free or self directed. I've been making art for a number of years and have met many tpes of artists, designers, teachers, etc... There is no standard. Some are creative, some are arrogant, sensitive, angry, boring, crazy, well adjusted,... There is just as much variation with people in the art world as anywhere else...BUTthe world of fashion and design has gobbled up alot of the art making population and the line between the two has been seriously blurred. Artmaking as a way of life is tough and few people really help. Sometimes you eat alot of cheese sandwiches, if you know what I mean.
If you like painting I'd say keep doing it, but if you don't love the process of making art then as I see it you have three options... Keep painting the way you like and when you like and seek a profession/education in another feild. Give it up... or look into a liberal arts education where you can find some information and inspiration about how and why art making has an impact on the greater social structure.
In any case find what it is that's going to make you feel fulfilled, you are at a really great stage in life and you should allow yourself to investigate your options and not decide your entire future right now. Good luck.

you are correct i've meet a few people who paint at shows and what not and they are always trying to be deep and what not. also alot of them have majors in the arts and are very broke your best bet is to take some painting classes(not very expensive)and just paint don't waste your time with college if all you want to do is paint.there is also another option if you are very creative you could go to college and enter some type of design program you might end up designing cars or houses(architect)or any thing you want. good luck

What I would do if I were you were to major in marketing. It seems like you have a lot of creativity but also you have to be very commited to painting to have it as a full time job. Marketing you can get all of your creativity out and possibily even paint too. I would put that creative mind to work by doing that and just paint on as a side to decorate your nice big office with when you get one. :)

Then by all means go to an art college and major in some kind of art form thats targeted towards painting.
What about drawing,or graphic design? Have you thought about these?

I wouldn't generalize-especially about artists.I've known many,& they were all very different. The art field is very very competitive.Don't bother if you don't have mad passion for it as a career. And art school gives you hours & hours of homework almost every night. That can even burn out the most passionate artist.Good luck.

If you're anything less than obsessive about it, please, do yourself a favor and get an M.B.A.

Go into business. Only go into art if it makes you physically sick not to.
