go for walks or bike rides, not too unusual but would keep the child entertained. If your area has a duck pond, go feed the ducks. Go camping or look into day camps at your local park and rec or YMCA. Go swimming, coloring books, play-doh, have her/him help you in the kitchen to make simple meals or snacks, have him/her help you in the garden (children love to help out!)

Crayons and large refrigerator boxes. Tell them to "paint" their box.
that ought to keep them busy for a little while. Use a small box as a chair and cut out a door. Toss in a couple of books and some stuffed animals. That should keep them busy for another 30 seconds or so.

Buy a cheap sprinkler and let him play outside in it. Take him walking, biking, exploring or just to the park. Finger paints, crayons, etc can be fun too.
