Sometimes it is a question of which cats prefer you. I obtained my current cat. Lucy (a short haired red tabby) at the animal shelter. My plan was to look at all the cats but she jumped up on her hind paws and said (in feline) "YOU! Take me home! I'm sick of this cage." When you receive an order like that you must obey. The other cats I have owned have all been rescues from other peoples poor judgment or cruelty or in one case a death. They were all short haired. The cats, not the people. I'd someday like to have an elegant long hair but fate keeps handing me these blue collar cats. But they are all beautiful in their own way and give unconditional love.

I like long haired cats better because they feel so soft and look so beautiful BUT...... they must be groomed more often then their short haired feline friends and their fur is always everywhere, on everything! Long haired cats need to be groomed(brushed) more often because they can get knots in their fur easily. In the spring and summer, when cats shed the most, cat fur is on everything(furniture, floor, beds, curtains, clothes, etc,) and it shows more when the fur is from a long haired cat! I still end up getting long haired cats!

I prefer cats with short hair because some cats with long fur tend to mat, and you have to cut out the mats because they pull at the skin level and cause pain. The other reason...ummm how do I put this nicely? When long haired cats get older they don't wash themselves back "there" and you have a yucky mess to keep clean...ya know?

I have actually found that my short and medium- haried cats shed worse than my long-haired cat, Lucy. Although, when she does shed...it's a big clump and when she throws up that hairball (this is normal) it's a huge piece of hair that looks like a turd (she is a black cat).
If I do not groom Lucy reguarly, she gets some nasty knots in her fur.
Long haired or short haired-daily brushing will help reduce shedding. Personally, my favorite fur is the soft, thick fur of my medium haired cat-but she sheds the worst!

Short haired cats are easier to take care of, but some long haired cats are so beautiful...I love the Norwegian forest cat!

long hair, they require more attention/care and more lap time/pats and are a little more friendly, with some of the short hairs I have owned they would require 20 minutes or less of pats/attention and then would ignore you the rest of the day, with the long haired himmy I have now its; your home ,pat me now!!! and it will be every hour on the hour, she follows me from room to room and usually is content to be in the same room as me in the summer time, come winter she will want to be on your lap when ever you are home. I love my long haired cat but its a huge amount of time that she requires so if you are not at home more than 8 hours don't get a long haired cat, they require their humans to be home.

In between. Long hairs shed really badly and short hairs are not as soft. I like cats that are in between. >^.^<

I prefer short-haired cats like Siamese. They are easier to groom.
