I am going into my senior year in high school and want to go to college after that. I ran across a scholarship for descendants of Vietnam veterans, but I don't have any Vietnam veterans in my family. But my grandfather did serve in the USMC during the Korean War, and fought in some gruesome battles like Chosin Reservior. Also, my uncle served in the Army Special Forces, but I don't think he was ever in combat. So are there any special scholarships available for me?

Wrf3k: Lots of people get scholarships for having the right ancestors. It's cruel, but that's the way the college world works. Look at all the minority scholarships out there.

What is American Legion? I've never heard of it, so I haven't participated. Otherwise, it looks like a cool scholarship.

I've never even heard of a scholarship for descendants of Vietnam veterans, and the Korean War, also known as "The Forgotten War", is considered less significant than Vietnam. So I don't think there are any scholarships available for you. However, if you are participating in a JROTC program at your high school than there are scholarships available from certain colleges like Texas A & M.

Yes there is, but you'll have to get moving to even apply.

Samsung Corporation, through The American Legion, established a trust to fund the award of College Scholarships to descendants of those who aided South Korea during the Korean War.

Go to www.legion.org and there will be a link to Scholarships and from there a link to Samsung Scholarship.

Complete details provided on link, but you will have work to do, so I hope you are highly motivated.

Chosin Reservoir more than gruesome, There is an organization associated with that incident and you may want to browse; The Chosin Few.

Wish you well, and if your grandfather is still alive, tell him no self respecting Veteran regards the Korean War as the forgotten War.

For your own edification, learn more about that War. Armistice that was declared marking cessation of hostilities-July 27, 1953.
Authorization for Flag to be flown at half-staff for certain part of that day is still part of Flag Code as far as I know.

I live in the State of North Carolina and work for Division of Veterans Affairs. Our agency offers scholarships for war time, honorably discharged veterans, but these scholarships are for veterans from our state and can only be used at schools in the state of NC. You might want to check your local Veterans Services to see if your state offers something like that.

You shouldnt get anything because your grandfather was a brave man. You want free college money? sign on the dotted line.

Edit: Yeah, your right about that, I just think its shady to go searching for it. If they came to you and said "heres money" like they do with minorities, then I would support the idea. If there are some good, I just think people get scholarships for stupid reasons nowadays.
