I'm going to LA with my brother next MArch, niether of us want to drive, so, as tourists, is it easy enough to get to all the major tourist attractions on public transport?
We are staying right by Mann's chinese theter, but was thinking about whether or not it'd be easy to get to Knotts berry farm, Santa Monica, Hollywood hills, etc.

LA transportation has vastly improved in reliavilty & safety, especially with the increase in gas prices more people are using it. It is still not at the level of other cities, but you can definately survive in LA without a car if you are willing to walk a bit and have it take a little longer to get from point A to B.

The Metro Red LIne (subway) will easily take you to Universal Studios and downtown from Hollywood. Also, many tours leave from Hollywood.

To get to Santa Monica, go to the mta website, but an example Ride Metro Bus 217( WASHINGTON/FAIRFAX) heading west
From: HOLLYWOOD BL/HIGHLAND AV(NW corner)
To: FAIRFAX AV/WILSHIRE BL(SW corner)
Ride Metro Rapid 720 (SANTA MONICA) heading west
From: WILSHIRE BL/FAIRFAX AV(NE corner)
To: COLORADO AV/OCEAN AV(SE corner)
Total Travel Time 1 hour

Knotts Berry Farm
Metro Red Line to downtown
Bus to Knotts Berry Harm
Total Travel Time 1 hour 40 minutes

The Mann's Theater area does not have that much to do and the area is rather seedy after dark. The good point is you are near the Chinese Theater and the El Captian theatre for movies, and you are near Hollywood and Vine, near the clubs and restaurants.

Otherwise the area you are staying is very touristy and seedy after dark.

If you go up and down Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd (just the next major street to the south) you can take the bus to the touristy spots. About 5 miles east of the Chinese Theater is the metro stop. The metro line can take you to the Universal Studios area and also to downtown LA, also as far as Long Beach using the Blue Line (about 45 minute train ride).

It will NOT take you to Disneyland or Knotts. You will need a car or shuttle to take you there.

Universal Studios does offer a shuttle to Anaheim, but youhave to call them for that information.

LA metropolian area is spread out... and public transportation here really stinks. You should think of renting a car for at least the weekends, when the bus/trains are not runinng full time, and the rental price is cheaper on weekends.

Enterprise rental can pick up from the hotel and its very inexpensive.

Public transportation is almost nonexistent in LA. It would take two days to get from Hollywood to Knotts Berry Farm. You need a car.

I went to LA 2 yrs ago, and the public transport is a little unreliable. The tube is OK but the car is the best way to travel.

I would suggest you forget about public transport as it is too slow and unreliable. If you and your brother don't want to hire a car then i would suggest you look at the various tour brochures that should be available in your hotel to see what you want to see.
Walking is out as it is too hot + there are freeways everywhere so you would never get across them.

There is no train service, it would not be cheap, and it would take more than a day each way. Only other choice is Greyhound. The trip is 20 hrs long and the lowest price ( if you buy the ticket at least 3 days ahead of time) is $179.00.
