A person has to have intelligence to be mechanical. You have to know how to take something apart, diagnose the problem, fix the problem and then put the item back together. Not everyone can do that!

don't worry about it. some people think only literary pursuits are intelligent but that is not true. If you want them to think you're "intellignet" then read books and discuss them. If you are not interested in those things then just keep fixing stuff. The "intelligent" people probably couldn't fix their way out of a paper bag. Do what you like.
