My dog is a 9 year old shetland sheepdog, is very loyal, and normally is fine at staying put when outdoors without being tied up. Lately, she has been sleeping a lot more and keeps wandering really far away from the house when left outside for even a few minutes. She is also very restless and seemingly confused. We took her to the vet and it was inconclusive. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

There is probably something different in your neighborhood that is bothering her. Tie her up until she gets used to the new smell.

There is a condition in dogs called Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome(CDS) It causes many of the symptoms you described. It is like Alzheimer's in dogs.

Here is a check list you can go through. I got it off of this site: www.cdsindogs.com. You may want to ask your vet about this as well.

(Disorientation/Confusion)
Appear lost or confused in the house or yard?
Fail to recognize familiar people?
Fail to respond to verbal cues or name?
Have difficulty finding the door or stand on the hinge side of the door?
Appear to forget the reason for going outdoors?
(Interaction with family members)
Seek attention less often?
Walk away when being petted?
Show less enthusiasm upon greeting you?
No longer greet family members?
(Sleep and activity changes)
Sleep more during the day?
Sleep less during the night?
Wander or pace more?
(Loss of house-training)
Urinate indoors?
Have accidents indoors soon after being outside?
Forget to ask you to go outside?

There is now a food created by Hill's that is for dogs with CDS. It has been shown to help ease the symptoms.
