The english language has taken a nose dive since the world of the internet and individuals today can't spell nearly as well as people did 20 years ago. I have read so many questions and answers and the spelling is horrible. The funny thing is, Yahoo Questions has Spell Check, but it appears many don't use it. Your thoughts, please.

I think it hilarious, in a sad way, that people who are answering questions on in the Education Section of this forum think it is okay to not spell correctly.
As for those where English is not their first or second language, 1) how do they know what anyone is asking if it is in English and 2) when you read it, you clearly can tell English isn't their primary language.

Many have posted that the message or intent is most important, but even when the spelling is absolutely correct, people still have misunderstandings. It is worse when bad spelling or abbreviations make you guess at what someones means.

TO dl200558: Sounds like you are seriously bitter about others responding to your lack of intelligence. It also sounds like you are seriously insecure when it comes to common grammar. If you don't post questions anymore, then why respond to questions? If you don't like how society responds to your lack of spelling abilities, then do something about it instead of blaming everyone else for your incompetence. Get educated.

Yes, correct answers that are rewarded should include correct spelling at the very least!
You are also correct that the state of the English language is in trouble since the introduction of the internet.
Why folks don't use the spellcheck is truly the mystery of the known universe!

If the questioner makes a mistake it is pardonable but the person answering the question should be more careful. But I won't say that just because of some spelling mistake I would not give best answer rating. After all the contents of the answer are far more important. You mentioned about spell check. But the best method is not to rely too much on such tools. One of the problems with English is there are differences in British & American spellings.

Spelling is not a big priority in my life. There are worse things that piss me off. Maybe Schools should teach spelling the whole 12 years, Because mine didn't. Its funny cause I'm a bad speller but I sware its the Schools fault. When I was in high school my teachers wanted reports typed out on the computer double spaced. Well HELLO I had good old spell check right on the PC. Therefore I did not need to learn how to spell. Its easy to correct spelling on the computer but in the "real world" Its actually embarrassing that I do not know how to spell!
I did spell check after typing this and had 5 mistakes!

Generally I am not bothered by spelling mistakes, unless the answer or question is just one long typo. We all make spelling mistakes occassionally. Personally I don't use the spell check feature often, this is because 9 times out of 10 when I click on it I am told it's not working. I usually go back and correct my errors if I catch them in a post just for the sake of sounding reasonable and sane.
What really bothers me on Yahoo Answers is that too many people who post questions are not looking for honest thoughtful answers, they are just looking for validation of their position. If you doubt this just look at the all the questions designed to bash one group or another.
Back to the issue of spelling, usually if I can understand the person's intent misspellings don't bother me too much.
OK now I have to take exception when you start to criticize people for stating their opinion regarding a question in the education section when you can't even seem to use proper grammar yourself. It's a situation of the pot calling the kettle black. So get over yourself!
Example: I think it hilarious, in a sad way, that people who are answering questions on in the Education Section of this forum think it is okay to not spell correctly.

The message is usually more important than the grammar. Other social phenomenon are the source of poor grammar not communications devices as the Internet, telephone, type writers, pen and paper etc. Incidentally, if you find the inclination to do so, give up being manager of the universe and you will have much less stress in your life and have much more time to attend to your own backyard. Remember, when you point your finger at others, four fingers are pointing back at you.

Proper spelling does alter my opinion of the comments on this site.I tend to ignore the content and maybe I should pay more attention to that, keeping in mind that english may not be the first language of the person writing it.Content is more important than the spelling.

I hear you but sometimes they're just typo's and that's pretty obvious and when people start jumping up and down over that that's just sad.
Also I always use the spell check and it's not detected any misspellings only for their to be a typo that's altered the word into nothing and the spell checker didn't pick up on it!

Have you stopped to think that many of the people here aren't native English speakers? The spelling mistakes are natural.. and frankly, I rather answer one more question than do a stupid spell check.

I would think that those who put themselves forward to answer questions should do so in appropriate English with appropriate conventions. However, there are those who use the internet for whom English is not a first or even second language, and therefore I believe that we should be charitable of their efforts.

It doesnt have to be perfect, most times I leave
out punctuation simply for convenience.
I think who ever has the best and most useful
advice gets the medal. But if it is totally illegible
and the grammar is horrible you wont be able
to understand it anyway.
Good info is good info no matter who it comes from.
