Nishi,
Software in itself is a vast field. Except for certain core products like Operating systems, compilers, databases etc, it mostly acts like a helper discipline for other fields like electrical, mechanical etc. For eg. if you are an Electrical/Electronic engineer in a chip-design company you would be writing programs/scripts to design/develop/validate a chip, or if you are an Instrumentation engineer and working in a company like National Instruments, you would be writing software to enable virtual instrumentation. By dwelving into software you do not have to forget your core field, but rather provide additional skills to do more in the field of your choice.
