Basically it means that you got kicked out of the service. You will not be able to get a government job, any job requiring that you be bonded, any job requiring a security clearance, no defense contractor will touch you, very limited VA benefits, and loss of any college scholarship.

And it does not automatically upgrade to 'honorable.'
