So Heart of Midlothian have a CL spot, but qualifiers first. How far will they get, and if they get far enough, what teams will they be up against? Fantasy answers are welcome - and so is good advice on bets ;o)

Rangers fans: feel free to answer, but don't relate everything to the third Glasgow team please, it's knackering.

Hi Alwyn, i'm a Heart of Midlothian fan, i'm afraid I have to congratulate Steff on his/her in depth knowledge of the game. Hearts played well last season, with a lot of flair if he/she seems to have forgot. When the flair wasn't there they rolled up their sleeves and fought hard. Rangers DID also play well, but they didn't have players with the same level of ability, grit and determination. It's changed days in scottish football now that Hearts have money. Steff and the rest of his true Grimy blue mukkkurz had better wake up and smell the buckfast.
(Sigh!) thats better! Hearts will be prepared for their first game against either the Belorussians or the Bosnians. So your first bet for me is that Hearts don't conceed a goal over the two legs. There are some very big teams in the next round, so I can't realistically say what will happen then. It's a test of how far Hearts have come, if we do get some top euro club. Theres the chance we get a wee team still though. It'll be seen as a great achievement if we make it to the group stages. (Good odds I imagine) We've beaten Bayern Munich, Bordeaux and Basle in the past, without a pot to p*** in. Romanov spent pretty wisely last year, with a few more additions before this season starts, I certainly won't fear anyone they face! Put a £1 on Hearts to win the thing! Why not! You'd be rich if they did!

Good luck to them. I notice you are pretty much anti-Rangers but i'll answer your question anyway.
Hearts will find it difficult to qualify. The first game should not be much of a problem, but if they do bypass the qualifiers, they will be in for a very tough time in the group stages. Do not take the qualifiers for granted. just ask Celtic when they played unknown Artmedia.
If they do make it to the groups, they will struggle. If they are lucky they will end up in the UEFA cup with Rangers, but i do see them being the whipping boys of the group, as they have no Champions League experience, no top players of European class and a coach with little experience of European football. If he is still there by that time.
Hearts dropped 18 points from their 19 point gap above Rangers last year. This does not to me show an improving team.
Good luck for the sake of Scottish football, if they make it i sincereley hope they do well, as i do with Celtic in europe, but i very much doubt they will.

I honestly feel progress in the Champions League is dependant upon previous experience hence we usually see the same teams year in year out in the last 16. The first hurdle is for Hearts to make the Group Stage and then who knows. My feelings are that if they make the Group stage and put in some good performances thereafter they will have done well but I dont think we will see them in the last 16. I wish them lots of success but it is a big step up.

The target is to make the group stages and if that happens then we can be extremely proud of the team. I would be surprised to see them go any further but with a lucky draw and some sterling performances like last season anything might happen. The main thing for all the supporters to do is to come out and support the team at Murrayfield. Fill the stadium and make it an imposing venue for whatever opponents we come up against.

as a ST MIRREN supporter i wish you all the best ,i really hope a Scottish team other than the bigot brothers does well in Europe to prove to everyone in Europe we are not all sectarian bigots who sing about events that happened in another country (if the 2 of them got together cut out there religious crap thought about Scotland more with hearts and hibs all pulling together this COULD be a better country ,but is that what people want , i fear they dont ,they would rather bring their country down with sectarian bigotry

Brussels, Belgium is known as the heart of Europe because most major EU institutions are in this city.

PMSFL!!!! Have you ever watched a game of football? If you had then you'd know you just spouted alot of pish there.
They might get to the group stages and if they do they'll get humped every game. Hearts played well last season while Rangers played poorly, it's the only reason they scraped 2nd place (by the hairs of their arses may I add).

Well first things first, just enjoy the occasion don't build castles in the air.
You'll need to pre-qualify and will need doses of luck in the draw.
Your team might get lucky, if the Italian powerhouses are demoted, so the likes of palermo et al might not prove to be as strong a challenge as Juve or Milan.
If you make it good, do your best like FC Thun and Artmedia, if you don't, just too bad, but support your club even harder and hope they continue to bridge the gap to the Old firm.
