I think it is because they think its a pitbull.. There are several breeds that are similar looking to a pit and people are just stupid!
FOR OTHERS: The staffordshire bull terrier is NOT a pitbull!!

Bull terriers had a lot of bad press in the past after attacks on children. I think that they have been bred to fight as well so they can be aggressive. There are also people who buy this breed because it makes them look hard having a bull terrier. The same is true of Rottweilers. With proper care and training these dogs can be acceptable companions but I feel they always have the potential to turn nasty and should not be trusted with children.
I love dogs but have a labrador as I think they are bred to be gentle and friendly. Just my opinion

I'm w/ Moonfairy. Staffies are very similar in appearance with Pits. Only Staffies are stockier and more mild tempered. If they give you a dirty look just say, "It's a Staffordshire Terrier, not a Pit Bull!" If they don't believe you, that's okay, just keep walking. They can't do anything unless he hurts someone, but I highly doubt the sweetheart would do that.

I have 2 staffs, and although there has been a lot of bad press about them, I have never known a nicer breed of dog. People who think they are violent or temperamental animals really haven't spent enough time in their company. Of course you will get the odd person who brings their dog up to be vicious, but they are few and far between, any Staff that has been brought up in a loving environment will be the most loyal companion you could hope for, will protect you should you need it to but won't maul passing strangers. The quicker people realise this about this beautiful breed the better in my opinion.

I have a nine year old staffy, have had him for seven years. He is a family dog, plays with the grand kids, Any dog is only as good as it's training. Any dog can be made vicious, even ankle biters. Any dog treated and trained correctly makes a great loving pet.

Their perception is that it's an agressive dog and liable to attack and bite! Totally wrong. The majority of staffies I have come across are good tempered and usually good with children. It's the owners that cause their reputation - especially those who kit it out with a huge studded collar, allow it to pull in front of them on the lead, and allow (even encourage) it to be aggressive and feisty. It suits their image!

I must admit tht when i see a Staff or a similardog, i get nervous but that is because there are so many people who buy them just for that, you see groups of youths walking with staffs pulling on their lead and they are there to look scary and trained to pull and bark.
I think like all dogs with responsible loving owners they can be nice, its just a pity that they seem to be favoured by ireesponsible owners.
Also i think the fact that they could if they choose to, do alot of damage that scares me.

I think they get a bad press but that's mainly due to neglegant owners. They were originally bred for fighting in the bull and bear pit, you can take from that whatever meaning you like though a dog is only as good as its handler.

Used to have one so - beautiful, friendly, protective, great with children, playful and very loving.
Bad points - if a fight is started (rarely do staffs start a fight) they are very capable of finishing it. But responsible owners will take precautions to ensure their dog is never placed in that situation.
My dog who lived to 12 only ever got in one fight (and he used to happily live with 3 other male dogs who were not staffs) and that was with another male staff who started a fight with him.
Beautiful dogs but as with any dog it is up to the owner to make sure the dog is socialised and not aggressive.

My brother has one and I am nervous about having my 2 young children around it-I guess most of the press about this breed is not good!
