There is no such thing as "Best Surround Sound System for the Money". There IS such thing as "Best Sounding Surround Sound System for my Personal Taste". The best thing you can do is go to a few REAL home theater stores in your area, and demo a few. If you want an all in 1 solution with DVD player, speakers, subwoofer and such... Harmon Kardon makes some NICE stuff. I personally run a component setup with a Receiver from B&K (hand built high current amplifiers based out of New York), a Linn Unidisc SC DVD Player, and Definitive Technology speakers. There ARE better sounding setups out there, but for about $5-9000, this is hard to beat.
Having been a VERY high end electronics salesperson for several years, I can say that the best sounding systems I have EVER HEARD are based around amplifiers from Krell or McIntosh Labs (NOT affiliated with Apple Computers in ANY WAY!) and speakers by Martin Logan or Sonus Faber, but with surround sound systems using these brands exceeding $20,000, it might be a bit over the top! Bose is a strong brand, but they have a boomy sound which lacks the clarity in the mid range to really set them apart from other brands. As a salesperson, our inside joke was "No high's, all Low's, it must be Bose"

Hope this gives you some guidance!

Are you buying piece by piece or a system in a box? Do not listen to anyone who tells you to buy Bose. Bose is overrated and anyone who knows home theater will tell you that it really is junk. You could get a Marantz receiver for about $1k and Boston Acoustic VRM80s for the front and VRM60s for the rear and the VRMC as your center channel. This is a great set up. If you want to go even higher end on everything, I'd recommend a McIntosh receiver and Sonus Faber speakers. No matter what you want for a system, Velodyne subwoofers are the first and only name you should consider. Be sure to get yourself a very good surge protector also. Monster has great ones that also serve as power conditioners as well and will run you anywhere from $400 to $1k.

honestly if your not an audiophile and want ease of setup and use, you could simply look at any highend system from Panasonic. Chances are they make something that matches your TV and everything would work well together. Once you get into this type of system (typically called "Theatre in a Box") for example Panasonic model# SC-RT50 which also has HDTV output to connect to your TV. Once you have this you can look at upgrading components like speakers, sub etc or enjoy as is .

The best thing you can do look for a local home theater company, not Circuit City, Goodguys, Fry's, Best Buy or any other box company. Check if they belong to Cedia or have certifications from Cedia, HAA, ISF, THX. If the have people on staff with some certifications from these organizations then you are going in the right direction. They will most likely be able to give you free in home consultation to address your needs based on the room and your budget.
You can do a search for a home theater company at http://www.electroniclifestyle.com/finder/finder_form.php
As to my preferences for Home Theater Gear:
Electronics:
Lexicon, McIntosh, Krell, Bryston
Speakers:
B&W, Triad Speakers, McIntosh
If you are in the Lake Tahoe/Reno area IM me and I can have a sales person give you a call.

Hi Mia.
The very best (assuming you want an all-in-one system of the same brand) is Denon. Next best is Onkyo. Both have excellent electronics and really good speakers. Most other all-in-one-systems have a compromise in the speakers which produces poor sound quality. You already have one of the best TV's, so don;t compromise on the reat of the system. Good Luck.

You can see the Onkyo systems at www.crutchfield.com

best sound system if price doesnt matter, is B&W. you can get the same speakers lucas film, sony music, and a list of others use. hook them up to a macontosh amp, with a marantz reciever, and your sound system will be crazy good. but if you dont want to spend $50,000, then i would go with a marantz reciever and some klipsch referance speakers all the way around. dont bother with best buy or circut city. you will just waist your money.

good luck to you and i hope this help you.

oh by the way bose speakers suck. stear clear of them, and harmin-karmda (sp) recievers. they should be sewed for false advertisement, but thats a whole nother issue.

It all depends on how deep your pockets are? How large your room is?

I would not purchase anything less that 500 watts. Just look at the local sells papers on Sunday. Best Buy and Walmart usually have pretty good deals or go on-line TONS and TONS of systems and reviews .

Just my 2 cents

im not sure what company to advice you but to make sure it gives good sound the speakers should be in wooden box not plastic or metal, as far as i know wooden is the most expensive but its worth, also cables are important, gold or copper but about copper im not sure, i havent been in this long time. but gold will do fine, just go on the site of for example Panasonic and check what they got with wooden boxes.
