The most important things to do to find a car are
1. Look at your economics (what can you afford to pay for a vehicle)
2. Is the vehicle a long term comitment more than 5 years or is it temporary less than 5 years. Usually this mean weather you have children or planing to have children this would be a long term comitment. Short term is you are single, or with someone but not planing to have kids yet.
3. Is it worth the money that is valued at, for this you gotta do your homework and test drive, ask question, dont get pressure into buying, never never believe the price on a blue book or whatever book. Vehicles are worth what you and the rest of the consumer values them at not what dealers want you to believe they are valued at. I have seen vehicles worth $70,000 sell for $3,000 dollars to dealers, and the dealer has turned around and sell it for $56,000 making the customer believe they got a realy good deal so dont feel bad when you deal with a dealer. Maybe the sales man wont make that much, but you can be sure the dealer is making money.
4. Buy vehicles that are less expensive to get parts for, that will be vehicles built here. Even though a Lexus 300 is the same as a Camary and share the same transmissions the cost of the part for the lexus are 40% higher just because of the name. And though the transmission is shared by a domestic vehicle the camarys is 70% higher in cost and with a different name.
Shop smart not blind.

The "right car" is a relative term. The right one for you depends on your situation.
Ask yourself a few questions:
Do I need room to haul things, such as a pickup?
Do I need a roomy interior for children, work, etc, like a minivan or SUV?
Am I mainly concerned about gas mileage, or am I looking for something a bit sportier?
Obviuosly, there are several more factors that come into play when buying a car...price, reliability, warranty among them...but that will get you started in the right direction.
There are several websites that will help you make the decision. Someone mentioned autotrader.com, but kbb.com and edmunds.com are good sites too. They give you a lot of infromation such as invoice price, reviews, etc. If you have a specific car in mind, all manufacturers have websites and most of them allow you to build a "virtual car" so you can get an idea of what is available.
Here in Maryland, car dealers are closed on Sunday, so I usually go to the car lots on a Sunday to look at the cars I like up close. You can't test drive or haggle on price, but it's nice to get a look a few cars without having to deal with salesmen...you can always go back on another day if you see something you like.
I've been shopping for a new car and there is a lot of info available online...if you do some research, it will help you make your decision.

Go and test drive some cars then look at what car for reviews, see what people who own one actually think of them.
We neary bought a particular car but when we looked at what car there where a lot of complaints about it so we picked something else instead.
