I also have an overactive imagination. In almost any situation I can clearly picture bad stuff happening. It's scary and frustrating!
I would talk to your doctor. It's not uncommon when you are trying to go to sleep because that is when your not distracted by tasks, etc. You are then able to let your mind wonder and your imagination is taking over.
Your doctor could prescribe you a sleeping pill. Some are not addictive unless you abuse them.
I was going to try "Ambian"(spelling?), but my issues run a little deeper and needed "Zoloft".
GOOD LUCK!

Try something like Yoga which is an exercise combining mind and body and will help you to relax and go to sleep.

You could also try to read something funny in the evening where your mind is occupied with that rather then with the gloomy details of how to die.
Just remember this: when our day comes, it will come, and until it comes do we not know when or how we die. You can consciously try to think that over and over--eventually it will work. Or you could concentrate on counting sheep over and over, totally occupying yourself with numbers--eventually falling asleep without thinking about death.
If all that won't work, then I think it probably would be best to see a doctor.

Somebody once told me a self-hypnosis technique.

First think of your favourite peaceful place then lying flat on your back with your arms at your side and legs straight (i.e. not crossed) close your eyes and imagine yourself at the bottom of an elevator, at the top of the elevator is your peaceful place.

Start counting slowly in your head to 10 as you ascend the elevator (or descend - your choice) and breath deeply. ou can see the peaceful place getting closer, as you reach 10 you reach your peaceful place.

I also have a racing mind and though it doesn't always make me sleep the method does stop my mind racing as I am more relaxed.

This is a dead serious answer. Watch movies- funny ones, about death, or some movie that laughs and talks about death.
Pay particular attention to the scene in "What About Bob?", in which Bill Murray and the little kid are in the bedroom and the little kid talks about death-no, I won't give it away, but it's hilarious.
Laughing about death, at death, will de-sensitize you to this
anxiety. Besides, deaths' a joke in itself.
