Tha European part of Turkey is more European than the rest. It was in the hands of Christians before. In fact in 1912 the Bulgarians(Orthodox Christians) kicked out Turks back to Asia, but then the "Great powers" gave this Muslim nation a good part of Europe, robbing Bulgaria again. The Bulgarians were expelled or killed. Turks committed genocide everywhere they went.
Greeks, Bulgarians, Armenians, Serbs... all Balkan nations have suffered enormously under Turkish rule.

First of all, Turkey is not divided to Northern, Southern, Eastern or Western... Turkey is a unitary republic. Secondly, all countries have different conditions. Of course economy is very dominant on the evolution of these conditions. Like Italy's northern parts, the west part of Turkey is more developed. There are many factories and educational facilities are better. The eastern part is less developed. Feodality is dominant on family and community relations. Traditional understanding and practices still affects people's living. The despotic landlords, still resists to the natural flow of the civilization of the society. And they use religion as a tool unfortunately. Also ethnical differences and poverty are used as a tool to create conflict between the people...

Well lets not get carried away here. For sure they are not like W Europeans. On the other hand they are not Saudis or Iranians. In Turkey they have a lighter version of Islam that allows them to be much more tolerable than other Islamic countries. In W Turkey, where they actually live from tourism, they are (by need) very tolerable to tourists.

I'm a european man who lives in Western Turkey.
and the Turkish people are very forward thinking people and they are very much like most european countries as some people are religious and some aren't The west of Turkey doesn't stop at prayer call. The people are very friendly and warm and welcoming. They like meeting new people and not just Tourist.
Speak a little turkish it goes a long way.
The best peace of advise I can offer is don't form an opinion of turkish people until you've spent time with them in their country.

Some of them are liberals, some of them are convervatives. Islamic background does not keep someone to be liberal, i think. And non-believers can be conservative. A father can be non religious and conservative, a son can be religious and liberal. Or living west or east does not make people more liberal.
Imagine the USA. There are liberals and conservatives everywhere.

What ever you do, behave yourself while you're in Turkey.
They enjoy putting westerners in jail, and using them for
sexual purposes. Steer clear of artifacts and souvenirs. You
may think you're getting a trinket, for a few pennies when
you are actually acquiring a restricted item. If you must go to
Turkey go with people who have been before and those who
are trust worthy. It is predominantly a Muslim country and they
are much more sympathetic to terrorists than you might think.
In addition, wife beating although frowned upon is considered
de rigueur. As with many Muslim countries pedophilia is also
de rigueur.
