I just got back from 15 minutes on my first day.

I'm 40 and in relatively good shape aside from the 20ish pound spare I need to lose before I'm 50 and it's too late.

Any other advice? I can't do sit-ups because I've got some neck/back problems.

20 minutes is ok. Exercise videos say after 20 minutes you start to burn fat. So for a first time, 20 minutes is ok. But do try to feel how your heart is reacting. If at the fifteenth minute you have difficulty breathing, start to slow down and then lengthen your jogging time slowly over a month. After this you'll find the comfortable and yet, fat burning pace your body can take.

Don't focus on the time, time never passes. Set directions for yourself. It gives you a real thrill to actually get somewhere at the end, a sense of achievement and the time just goes because the goal becomes what you are focussed on. and also it changes your whole idea of how far everything is and how limited you are or aren't. I feel so much more free ever since I started running as I don't drive and I've discovered I can run a lot of the distances I used to think I had to take the bus for and used to have to spend hours going out of my mind waiting for.

sit ups are no good on your neck ! i just had a 1000 dollar chiropractor bill from it I know. I would say what ever you are most comfortable with. as long as you can get your heart rate up and keep it up for a number of minutes(I belive it is around 7) it should help you out extremely. your " spare tire" as you call it will not go away from running you might want to try swimming or even bike riding.

Go moderately for the first 2 weeks. Not because you can't do more, but because you want to give your body time to adjust. Try, say, 30 minutes a day; after 2 weeks bump it up to 45; and on week 3 go for an hour. Repeat as needed.
