You may be viewing your document in the Normal layout and you won't notice on screen when you change the page orientation to Landscape.

Go to the View menu and choose Print Layout.

Now bring the blank page down to 50% or 25% zoom (It depends on your screen resolution). Choose whichever zoom allows you to see all of your page on screen.

If you haven't made any changes to your Page Layout, you should see your document in Portrait.

Now go to the File menu and choose Page Setup and change to Landscape.

You should now be able to see on screen that your page is in fact in the Landscape mode.

You won't be able to type with comfort at the present zoom level, so just bring the zoom back to 100% or whatever is comfortable for you. You can even change back to the Normal view layout if this is what you are used to, personally I prefer the Print layout, it gives you more of a feeling that you are typing on a page. You can also zoom in and out to see how the finished document will look.

Are you talking about printing in landscape? If so there is a setting in properties after hitting print. It will ask you if you want to print in portrait or landscape and you chose landscape for the paper on its side.

Now if you want the print to have the letters one under another that would be something different.

File -> Page Setup...
Click "Paper Size" tab, select Landscape.
