Though it's near impossible, you can reduce your chances by taking extra care when you surf websites. If you have someone else in the family or the home using the PC, then there's nothing you can do to really prevent it, since you can't control what they're doing without taking away privileges.

A lot of websites have ads that pop open asking you to click 'yes', 'no', 'close', etc. By doing this, you could be executing an install of spyware/adware. That's the trickiest thing to avoid really.

Avoid going to links from emails that are sent to you from anonymous sources. Make backups often once you've started off with a fresh install of Windows, giving you a safe path of return if anything starts to act up. Use software like Spybot, Ad-Aware, or PestPatrol to fight infections that find a way to your PC.

With the best anti spyware, can still exposed to being infected, but is alot less likely. Norton is a big company. They wouldn't be such a big company if they didn't do a good job. Go to www.norton.com

Download a good firewall as well as ad-aware. Try to keep away from websites that look suspisciuos and don't download or install anything without scanning it fully with an antivirus.

Also get a good firewall - I recommend AVG or ZoneAlarm
