A driving iron is the modern day equivalent of the 1 iron. However, it has a slightly larger face and is more forgiving.

Assuming you hit a 7 iron 150yrds the drving iron should go approx 220yrds. If you want further distance off the tee I would recommend using a driver and getting the hang of it. Driving irons are only useful if you want to hit 220-230 yards on a shortish or tight par 4.

I think drivers go about an extra 10 - 20 yards further than their respective irons.
