If you are from the USA, we never had National service except in time of declared war; then we call it the "draft"....personally I think National Service is a good idea to earn full citizenship.

Most military people I know DO NOT want the draft. Lets face it, do you want to work with and depend on someone who wants to be there, or at least volunteered to be there, or do you want to do it with someone who was forced into it and are just doing the bare minimum until they have done their time and can get out?
Do you want your kids taught by a teacher that loves to teach, and loves kids, or who just wants a paycheck?
Do you want a co-worker who is dedicated to getting the job done and pulls their own weight, or someone who just punches the time clock and drops the ball, making more work for you?
Now imagine if that co-worker not caring and dropping the ball means you get shot, or you don't get the supplies you need to stay safe....
Not to mention, neither party will be the one to bring it up, because neither of them want to be "that bad guy". But, even if they did, it's impractical, because if they only draft men (as it was set up, before women had such an expanded role in the military), then how many men would sue over sexual discrimination, since they don't draft women? And if they draft women, how many politicians and military figures would be crucified with the image and message of "yanking young girls out of their parent's arms" or "ripping young mothers away from their babies to force them to serve..."
Unless we have some sort of attack that makes Sept 11 look like a minor car crash, it's not going to happen.

yes definately, thers a new tv show started last night(ITV1) called bad lads army extreme, about 50`s army and yobs going and trying it,one cried for his mummy and left within the first half of show.
it will give them some respect and work ethic.Lets take our country back from the yob culture.I cant go out alone here, its full of yobs and ive been attacked many times,by druggies and thieves. The government are too gutless though, and we shall always remain victims of this lot and they the winners.Thats what they call justice these days.Lol.
I think criminals should be made to do this when being sentenced at court and not be able to leave till they have completed the course satisfactorily, stop the cushy jail sentences i say.But do this without guns, and with older troops who want to do it,you cant inflict these morons on the army in general.

I agree that there seems to be a need and that bring back national service appears to be a good answer on the surface, but I hope it doesn't lead to the draft. I've been in for 26 years and would rather work short with people who want to be here than to serve with the whining draftees that my older brother had to serve with.

not just no but HELL NO!
I am convinced that National Service plans are just another way to expand government. The military does not want people who do not want to be there and who is going to pay for all these people to be in the military.
The only way to help youth culture is to improve education with privatization and vouchers.

doesn't artwork. The attitudes of society have moved on from the 1950's even as it became phased out. look on the school rooms and see the version in training, no longer purely the subjects in spite of the indisputable fact that the procedures of learning and training. The facilities ought to no longer deal with the inability of health and indiscipline endemic in cutting-area youngsters. The facilities are a good knit, exceptionally disciplined and self influenced arm of society. we ought to always be asking about the covenant we've with servicemen. they're shoddily treated and ignored by technique of this administration.

You say military training is benefitial?! Teaching how to kill and follow blind the leaders?
Kids never had more or less respect than today. They were always the same.
The only advantage I can come up with is physical education.

I'm from the US & having spent a good deal of time in the UK I'd say HELL yes. I wish we'd institute something similiar in teh US w/o forcing them onto active duty & with other options for being teachers, cops, peace corps, etc.

Yes it couldn't hurt. But you know the Democrats have already suggested it a couple yrs ago. Military service didn't do me any harm at all.

it would be the best thing to happen...youths would mature a lot quicker & understand more about REAL-LIFE rather than knowing the latest clothes to have & meaningless s**t like that.
