In Word, select Insert, Symbol from the menu bar. The character map will open.

Change the Font: drop down box to Wingdings and then scroll down to the bottom of the grid. The tick is fourth from the right on the bottom row.

If you select the tick and then click on the Shortcut Key... button, you can set up a keyboard shortcut (e.g. CTRL+SHIFT+T) so you don't have to keep opening up the character map.

Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Character Map

Then change the font to Wingdings and you can see the tick symbol - just double-click and copy to clipboard.

Go into word and select Edit->Paste.

If you go to Start, Programs, Accessorys, there is a thing called Character Map and you can see all the different characters, saves you looking through each one. There is a good tick in Webdings

I'm not sure what you mean by 'tick' but the Webdings and Wingdings sections under INSERT-SYMBOL have a lot of popular symbols.
