I have a lot more faith in the street cop that I have in the police administrations. In our town, the chief donut eater (I call him Wiggins) announced to the world that his department was no longer going to respond to unverified home and business burglar alarms. Of course, burglaries went up 30% over the next year. (and like a typical civil servant who has never had to work a real day in his life, blamed other factors -- citizens blame him!)
Do they have a hard job? Yes - a lot of us have hard jobs. Is it harder or more dangerous that others? Despite what they have trumped it up to be, it is not even in the top 10. You are 4X's more likely to be killed as a miner, 1.5x's more likely to be killed as an industrial worker (oil, semiconductor, etc) than a police officer.
Are they overpaid? They are paid market rate. That is how it works in a market driven society. If you don't like the pay, quit. Others just as qualified will be there (works for every industry, not a single person is indispensable) The cops in my area have a top pay of $100K for some departments. Better than the average engineer (and the engineer has more than twice the formal education on average)
Fines usually go into the general fund. Not much of it actually goes back to the individual departments.

In today's Police i do not have much faith. Most of today's Police do not have a clue what they are doing, They have no interest in why they are carrying out the job they have undertaken and are only in it for what they can get out of it. the Police is run on Political correctness and the Officers on the street are mostly people who have no idea about real life. Te Police from around 20 years ago or longer and who have now since retired or resigned were people who were doing the job to make a difference and were so pissed off by the way the Judicial system went downhill and was seen to be be accommodating the criminal. more than the victim. Most senior officer's have not spent any more than 3-4 years on the street and therefore have no idea about how to Police the normal community. Everything they know is from books and not from real life. basically the Police of today is in a sorry state and cannot be relied upon to carry out their jobs effectively.

About a 7 (from 1-10) 'cus sometimes you wonder if things are gonna get any better without a couple vigalantes running around like Steven Segal. But then again dang, I've had to deal with a crank smokin step pop's and when the cops were called he went to jail for at least a night or two (even after threatening one with a knife). But yay, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, that's when you gotta break out the old bugshot like Segal and be the least paid employee to solve Earths probs (just do this in extreme cases though like when some dude's got a nuke right in front of ya threatening to blow it up and the guy you call for help hangs up on ya repeatedly saying "yeah whatever, did you take your pills today sir"click).

I have no faith in the police for protecting me. I have no faith in the police for acting in my best interest.
The only faith I put into police is that they will put some criminals in jail at some point in their career.
People don't seem to realize that police can't function as a protector, because they can't, and shouldn't, keep an eye on everyone at once.
Police can only act AFTER a crime has been committed, which means there is already a perpetrator and a victim.
Police cannot protect you.
Legislation cannot uphold your morals for you.
Your military is not your messiah.
Your president is not your god.

Faith in the police? In my country - none.
The other day a house was burgled and the police came up in police uniforms, registered police car to take the statement and it turns out they mugged the people. Cellphones, everything...
Thats why crime is so bad, because people don't even trust the police where I come from.
It just takes a handful of bad cops to put the whole force under the bad name.

None, nada, zip, I've known and dealt with too many of them. My dad was a cop, my best friend is a cop (I know - go figure), and several other of my aquaintances became cops. I know how they are, I know how they think. It's all about the adrenaline, man!! Nothing else. It's not about protecting us. "To serve and protect"...BS! It's about getting their rocks off thumping some guy they have handcuffed. It's about confiscating fireworks and then going and shooting them off themselves. It's about power and control. Cops (and firemen) are just canned heros - nothing else.

Both. They need that money, but I don't think the majority of cops are crooked. Irritable, yes. Sometimes not the sharpest tool in the shed, yes. But criminal or otherwise shady, no.
